If any drive that FC needs to read and/or write to is over 80% full, you have a problem.

I would have an archive drive that holds copies of projects you are not actively working on. Then I would have a media drive with your active projects. The new FC 10.1.2 allows you to store media anywhere you choose. This is great cause you can keep your libraries very small.

You can learn how to organize after you clean up your system. You can always relink media to your active project by pointing FC to where you stored your stuff. And with version 10.1.2 you can move stuff around from inside FC.

I would first delete FCP X and all the supporting files as explained above.

Be sure you have your apple ID and password ready.

Then click on the icon that looks like a giant A and if you hover over it says “app store”. Update all.

Please follow the instructions I gave above so that the new version will be installed in what is called a clean. install. It might not matter but since there were problems there might also be corruption is some file somewhere. It is quite painless. A clean install is not complicated. Follow the directions to trash all needed files and the rest the app store will take care of

The newest version of all is very safe and much improved. It will also have the advantage when you ask for help to have a system with the same configuration as everyone else.

After the installs are done, when you laid FC it will ask you if you want to update the library. Click yes. Though in theory you should save a back up of the library as is I haven’t heard a single complaint of something going a muck. If you are worried about it, first make a copy of the library to another folder.

Not quite following but the browser has a ton of metadata that will tell you creation dates and dates imported and the like. you also have timestamped auto back ups.

For audio fades, right click on the fade handle itself and you can choose a shape. For opacity fades, open the video animation on the clip and instead of using the built in fade handle, create your own with two key frames and then you can create others on the line or select a shape by control clicking. Or select ease by command clicking on the line.

Andy didn’t we used to be able to change the shape on the fade handle?

Thanks. They don’t seem trivial to me. I’d think they need to be fixed to allow XMLs to be a viable solution going forward. But the new library structure seems very solid and can be kept very small. Kinda like Time Machine is worth using but does not replace cloning.

Gotcha. Makes sense. The library is a small folder now and I guess the XMLs are still buggy? Or did you solve that part of it?

There are three basic things you create to build your structure in FC. The master folder is the library. That’s the one with the four stars. You can have as many libraries as you want. I find it less confusing to create a new library for each film, but it’s up to you.

The next is an event which is the single star folders. You store your media and timelines in those.

The third is not really a folder because it is a single item that is stored in the top level in an event folder. That is your timeline. FC calls it a “project.”

Go to file>new>project.

It will be stored in the current selected event.

Then double click on that and your new timeline will open.

If this was all stupid and you knew this already then trash permissions. If that doesn’t work, reinstall FC.

Thanks. Got it. I thought the angle viewer was a version of the viewer since it plays along with the timeline. But since you edit from it, it makes sense that it is what is in the event (which I was calling browser).

One more quick question. Should I create the multicam clip, select it in the browser, before starting to edit, and select the channels? Or select each of the clips I’m using in the browser, select the channels, and then create the multicam clip? Either way I can always override these choices in the inspector for a given clip in the timeline?

So the angle viewer is a representation of the browser not the timeline?
Yet the A angle is honoring the selection in the timeline (that is only a1 and a2 are active including new edits). This should be consistent, no?

Now If I select channels in the browser, and Cam B and C are muted, will the multicam auto syncing still take place?
