Not a comment on which is faster or more ergonomic; but whenever i want to select a beat on the timeline that I will need to use later for whatever reason, I just hit M (marker). If I want to set multiple In and Out points on the time line with a music track on the primary I just set a bunch of markers. If after, I connect the clips at the marker locations, it is not difficult to modify the I/Os on the timeline because there are always times when for whatever reasons it doesn’t play well at those points when playing it back at the given frame rate. What works when you have stopped time making one decision at a time doesn’t always play well. But maybe I’m just old school. I see a lot of footage where i feel the cuts come too fast. Looked like a cool shot; how about letting me watch it ? Was that the good guy”s friend or the bad guy’s muscle that just fell off the roof? If I’m setting the visual to a sound track, I can just listen to the song with one finger on the M key and click M at every beat or any beat that sounds like a good time to cut. And if listening to a timeline that has dialog, it’s also easy to set markers where some music should fade in or go silent or a cut-in or cutaway might help or hide a jump cut. In any case, a simple solution to the lost where I set the I or O points and then needed to do another command.

“No one ever complains that there are to many copies of the media…… Ever”

Yes of course. When you say camera disc you do mean the cam’s media card, right?

I was asking about the other way round. Have you ever known the recorder (Shogun) to fail and the media card saves the day. The media cards get reformatted pretty much right after they are backed up and yes sometimes they fail.

It doesn’t matter, it’s good practice as is backing up the back up.

    Thanks Brian,
    Just wondering-
Did you ever have the recorder not record something and the camera’s media cards save the day?

Thanks Patrick, From what have read either cam if shot with Lut 3 will give you a nicely processed, balanced, pleasant look.
Unless of course you have a colorist or advanced editor to do the same custom. This is true for any 4K raw footage. I figured someone on this forum, who has been a pro DOP or Camera Op, would have experience with both cams. Or maybe a side by side sample reel (I tried but I’ll try different keywords on a google search).

For me its a mixed bag. Back in the day when Canon XL1/2 SERIES vs the Sony PD1000-150-170 series I used both and way more the Sony – it was sharper and worked hand held etc. However the canon had better lenses and flaws in human faces were softened and more flattering. Didn’t buy the film look that was claimed but had a more pleasing look in some ways assuming you were mounted on a tripod or some other way. Canon had way better audio. Sony which made good audio equipment did not include that on this series of cameras. After that the mini HDV Canon cams were really good beginner or tight space cams and the Sony HVR-Z7U was a step up with interchangeable lenses (which Canon had) and even HMI out which allowed you to skip the HDV codec and record to a KiPro recorder in ProRes. Also that way, way better than capturing from mini-DV/HDV tape via firewire. Speaking of which the Canon cams were real hit or miss when you needed to ingest the footage on a Mac. The computer would often not see the external cam at all. Better luck using a SONY deck (ironically) for capture. I enjoyed using both cams. The canon also needed yearly trip to canon repair shop to realign the heads.

My real need here is which of these two has a better sensor/image. Canon has better knobs and built in features; the Sony has better shoulder mount ergonomics and a ton of upgradable accessories but their mirrorless still cams are great bang for the buck video cams and the sensor image looks great and the PXW-FS7M2 sensor is in that family with camcorder features. It was a no brainer when the c-300 was significantly more expensive … now at my budget back on table. Been using Panasonics the last view years 1080P. Kinda the Sony PD170 of the 1080 years. But the Sony was more bullet proof. Damn thing when to several wars. I know people who used them in Vietnam and the middle east.

The only way I know would be to rent one. And no worries on typos . I followed every word. Much better than apple fixing every word changing typos to proper spell but now a word that is not at all what I meant.

Don’t own one but looked into it. I remember reading that they have a preset in LUT 3?? If so the review included some shots straight out the cam and they looked really good.
