Call Amex imed. Explain that you want payment stopped or reversed. You have not been shipped goods yet so you should not be charged yet. You are getting the run around on phone and the company has had numerous complaints against them. If they do ship it will most likely be missing parts and or grey market item, which will not be covered properly under Canon warranty. Or they will insist on selling you overpriced accessories. Get out now while you can. Then order from a reputable company like bhphoto. The Sony pd170 sells for $2500 right now at BH. That’s a great deal if you like the DV format.

Here’s one possibility. Clone your current system onto a firewire drive. If you don’t have cloning software use CCC https://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html.

Then connect the firewire drive to the other computer. Install the update on the clone then connect the firewire drive back on your original computer. Try booting from the firewire drive to make sure all is well. If it is, clone the firewire drive back onto your Mac.

Or you could try one of those free trials for numerous ISPs.

2 x 250 gigs g-drives with 800 ports will allow this much footage at 83.2% capacity. You always want to leave some headroom or performance will suffer.

I’m very happy with my g-drive on both a G4 and G5. It matches the G5’s design. It sits horizontally on the desk or on top of the tower. It stays cool and is quiet. It’s fast and performs great.

Since this just covers your need you might want to go bigger.

Thanks. What’s the best way to transfer the files to the mac, and the best organization for those files? I assume that files that can be read by OS X apps should just be put in the usual places. Can you just transfer the entire ‘my documents’ folder to the user folder? Then install XP and the Windows apps from the original discs?

It’s a common organization scheme to keep your apps and system and regular doc files on your boot drive and media files like music, photos, and, most importantly, video on a second drive. I would also consider getting another external drive and backing up everything. Make the back up bootable and if you ever have any problems, you can get a loaner or new computer, boot from the back-up and not miss a beat.

You might cover how good production organization practices help when moving into the editing process: labeling tapes, no time code breaks (and how to achieve this), extra media in and out of every shot, keeping a time code log of scenes and takes and director notes as to what might be the best take, not recording on the very beginning and end of mini-dv tapes. Etc. Not sure what you cover in archiving but you might devote some attention to what to save and in what form
