So you are saying my current workflow/small camera choice is still the best? I figured if I captured using prores AVCHD would be the equivalent of HDV more or less. I really was just asking about optics/features and the workflow for large amount of projects that begin life as files and not tape.

We use a bunch of canon hv30-40. In FCP, I capture the footage as apple prores 422. no rendering problems. I was wondering if any of the card based canon cams compare favorably, pros and cons. Would like to join the modern world and move away from tape but do not wish to loose quality or have workflow/archiving problems. Been experimenting on the higher end by capturing directly to apple prores using a kipro and that works great. But with one kipro and 20 production teams that doesn’t replace this question.

Did you try to repair permissions? The only version of OS X that won’ work on a G4 is snow leopard. I would do search for the best version for the G4 and buy a disc. I’m sure older versions can be found cheap. If you don’t have an admin account then there isn’t a lot you can do. You can’t even install software.

Boot your G4 from an OS install disc. Change the admin password to your own. I’d probably back up my documents and reinstall everything. Also repair permissions might clear up issue.

Many moons ago, I had a fairly high-end photo printer ($750) from Epson. When the printer was about a year old, I updated the OS’s on a PC and a Mac. Epson failed to update their drivers. Our HP laser printer was supported right way with new drivers and clear documentation matching printer models, OS’s and the recommended print driver. Next time around, I bought a Canon photo printer. Not only does Canon continue to update their drivers but their print heads are less likely to clog which was a problem on the Epson. Epson’s print quality has continued to get good reviews, but they lost me as a customer. And if any of these companies stop inflating the price of ink refills I’d switch to their brand.

Thanks Steve. Well aware of this add on. Debating it for myself as I’m looking for a new desktop. Don’t think I can find school funding to ship 10 Imacs to OWC for this. Would consider it if it was a DIY and didn’t violate Applecare warranty. OWC will substitute their warranty for applecare if you have this BTO on a new Imac. Not sure what happens on an older model that is still under applecare. My guess is they will honor it.

That’s all I was asking — Will the 2 TB G-raids be much slower than the 1TB drive or smaller? I did notice that he didn’t actually show test results comparing < and > 1 TB drives. Comparing it to esata or internal drives is not relevant. Sharing the bus with other devices or drives is not relevant. Just wanted to know if I would need to use his workaround of partitioning the 2 TB raids into 1 TB partitions. I’ll use the AJA test when I get back to school and set up the Imacs.
He seems to have a close relationship with OWC in their VAR Mac configurations so I thought that gave him a good deal of validity. Strange, I thought, that no one else mentions the over 1 TB firewire bug. He also mentioned that some drives don’t have the bug so maybe it’s a firmware issue? Maybe certain bridges don’t support over 1 TB?
G-Technology 2TB G-Raid3 Quad Interface External Hard Drive Array are the drives I ordered. Is this the same as the ones you tested?
