Me too. Cursing Apple every step I get stuck on and happy again when I get unstuck. The last time I gave Avid a shot, I was cursing Avid for being rigid, not Mac like. Now I’m cursing Apple. It’s much better to be upset with something other than the app you are trying to learn.

So, like you, toolset (FCP’s window layout) getting in way. I think MC only lets you resize the composer window (FCP’s viewer/canvas) if it conforms to an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 4:3. You can resize the timeline to fill in nicely. The more you stretch out the composer window the wider it can be. This is true in FC too but with the snapping feature it was easier to configure.

I’ve also learned to take AVID’s advice to have all gear plugged in and powered on before opening MC. I was fooling with a second monitor and not having it powered on before left me with weird default window layouts — the project window display (FCP’s browser) was on top of or behind the timeline and composer window.

I rebooted and set all toolsets back to defaults, but I still do not fill the screen on my cinema display. Would love to have at least the Mac finder window not be peaking through so much. So I went back to custom dragging them about and now I think I’ll just change my finder window to something that complements the 1984 gray color scheme of the AVID UI. I’m thinking light blue.

Unless someone lets us know how to turn AVID workspace into a LION IPAD app that fills the screen.

Got copy of Avid 5.5. How to book on way. Tried this last summer at v3 and found the interface unmac like or at least so different than FC that it felt uncomfortable. Mostly for me this was about how it interacted with the Mac OS. In other words, the browser window part of the program. Granted, media management is exactly where it shines compared to FCP 7. Two versions later and Avid is more open in their support and I figure the community of users will grow way beyond the broadcast pro market. Also, as unfamiliar as it felt, it was very solid and powerful.

For education, AVID offers ed prices and 4 years of free upgrades. The reason this matters beyond educators like myself — if an app becomes more popular at film schools this will grow its user base.

PP is the most like FC and many switchers feel it is basically FCP 8. Some say they tried and it’s a FC pretender, but I’m not clear where it lacks. Would love to hear details. Adobe is obviously trying to grow in this market quickly and they already have standards like photoshop and after effects.

I don’t think you can loose with either one. I would say if you want the least painful transition go with PP. If you do a lot of broadcast work go with AVID.

OFF TOPIC: Meantime we’ll see how FC X evolves. Maybe if they add multicam and alphabet exports and imports and thunderbolt/lightspeed monitors and raids are common and the cloud dominates distribution and Apple releases FC X Color, FC X will take its place among pro apps.

Word processing/broadband did this for writing. There are writers now at all levels that get an audience. There will be room for ‘pros’ now that video is a new form of literacy.

I have been wondering for a while … if the cloud is the distribution system, what is the proper form of color correction?

I was thinking much the same but didn’t want to give congress any excuses why they couldn’t reach an agreement before the world as we know it comes to an end.

The first one was July 2010. The last one was July 22 2011 Friday at 3:30 am. No one was using the computer then. It was on. For each date there are many of these

I even ran some command line script, and I’m a terminal moron, that told me that OS X’s maintenance procedures have run recently, so that wasn’t it.

Been using FCP for a while and never faced this. I’m at 91% full and don’t want to push it. On the road and don’t have my external drives to move things to. Can’t test FC projects because the media drive is at home.

Keep an eye on ebay and the like. Now that FCS will not be updated, I assume people will be selling old copies, legit. Don’t know if it will be buggy on Lion but before that all good.

Go back one gen in software. You can play with the new toy FCP X in snow leopard to get used to the new way of thinking while you do your real work in FCS 3 and photoshop. Meantime give Apple some time to get out the bugs and you are back on turf you know. Your clients could care less that you have to wait longer for renders.

Hi Curtis,

When I add up all my master folders on my hard drive they come to about 127 gigs. The hard drive is 232. There are only 22 gigs remaining. That means there is about 83 gigs hidden.

What is disk cleaner? How safe to use it? I’ve backed up all.

Not being able to open FCP 1-7 projects is a feature all FCP users care about.

I think a lot of younger mac users will be able to handle FCP X. They grew up with computers and now consumer devices that shoot HD video. It’s a good fit. What might be a problem for Apple is if the pros don’t buy in then schools won’t buy in and this same computer literate crowd might join that parade.

On the one hand, Apple products have an elite feel to them; on the other, “I use the software that Hollywood uses” has as well.

My guess, a bit of both with Apple making attempts to add the features that are most demanded. Meantime, Apple leads the march towards tapeless cloud based media.

Problems: memory cards are not cheap enough, Hard drives are not reliable enough. Apple might lead the way but legacy stuff hangs around for years. I was a Mac head when Apple decided that floppies were obsolete. They were right but it was a pain not to have the drive. People still deliver by DVD and if Apple had gotten behind blue ray it would be much more common. The pros still deliver on tape. It is not always the right thing to cut the cord. Just offer something better and the old way will fade away.
