10-bit means 2^10=1024
1024^3 RGB is 1,073,741,824 or a billion colors.Cory

A composition is a collection of layers.
No layers and you can render a black video from a blank composition.
No composition and you can’t even render a video.
Compositions can also serve as layers for other compositions, among many other types of objects like solids or footage. When this happens it is often called a pre-composition.
Definitions like these are the kind of things I said you need to learn for foundational knowledge. These are defined ad naseum in the help.

What do you mean random stops? In the animation, or in the render or what?
QT Animation is a low compression codec. If the resolution is large, 3 minutes could easily be several gig or more.
A 40gb file for 3:30 minutes means 195mb/sec. Very few harddrives can read data that fast, so you won’t be able to play that file smoothly.
If your delivery medium is web, output in h264. Use an intermediate codec and compress with a good h264 encoder if you have one, or use adobe’s built in h264.
If the delivery medium is some other output, then you need to specify these details, or just talk with the recipient of your footage for the desired specifications.

This is also a great starter resource.

Learning something is rarely effective done through [random] trial and error. It is done through building foundation. The journeyman can experiment with trial and error and they will learn every time. A neophyte usually does not. Use the guides given to develop your foundation and focus on that. Basic concepts like compositions, layers, solids, definitions, and the interface are foundational elements that you need to learn on day 1.

I’ve used a lot of Vegas, Premiere and AE. Vegas is pretty good. Premiere CS4 sucks hard due to instability and clunky interface. CS5 is a little more stable, but still the interface is clunky. AE is great and stable. I have not used FCP, but have heard from dual FCP/vegas users that they like vegas better.
My workflow is now:
Vegas, export cut to AAF, Convert AAF in premiere, Import in AE, Render with x264 (h264) or hcencoder (mpeg2).

You would start with masks to mask off certain bits of footage. Then animate their movement as they expand or contract. That’s about it. Find some tutorials on creating animated masks in AE.

This is an AE forum. Your question will be better addressed in the Canon DSLR forum. https://forums.creativecow.net/canonmarkii

That could have been done in any 3d program, or even after effects(with a little extra work). Blender, Maya, C4D, Max, XSI, etc. They can all make those thought bubble plates easily. Then the video and titles would be composited with something like AE.

Morphing images and high dynamic range images are two different concepts. Perhaps you are referring to tone mapping bracketed exposures into a low dynamic range. In that case you can find a tutorial and a plugin (separate solutions) here:

– Studio quality monitor? You’re looking at $1000. Forget it. Get a nice 8-bit IPS lcd panel. I picked up an HP ZR24w for ~$400. It has very good color and uniformity and doesn’t break the bank. I have an external broadcast monitor for broadcast quality color, but you’re not doing video.
– Number of cores and memory – I’m running on a core2duo with 4gb of memory. It’s fine. More would be nice, but this is fine for what you are doing. I’m editing and grading 4k red footage, and rendering 3d motion graphics on this thing. You’ll be drawing. AE is CPU and memory bound, so the more the better, but anything down to a core2duo is quite adequate.
– Harddrive – don’t waste your time with anything less than a 7200rpm drive. Even for a laptop; hold out for a 7200rpm drive, or plan to replace it. This is the single greatest performance loss for most systems. Otherwise, any size will be fine. I prefer seagate; a single 500gb seagate would be quite adequate. Make sure to get a backup drive.
– Min graphics card – Any recent, inexpensive nvidia card will work great for you, like a geforce 210. It should support DXVA (h264 hw acceleration) and cuda and opencl.
– Software – Get Windows 7 64-bit (any version), and CS5.
