Yes it can be done in FCP, but easing in and out a move is not easy to do in FCP. FCP only does good with linear moves. If you want it to look smooth I would do it in Motion or AE.

Thanks a lot! I know After Effects a little bit, but I was wondering what kind of editing do you call it! How would you go about it?

You would start with masks to mask off certain bits of footage. Then animate their movement as they expand or contract. That’s about it. Find some tutorials on creating animated masks in AE.
