I’m converting the wrapped .wmv to .mov with flip-for-mac. It’s built right into the browser with I download the video in firefox.

I may try ProRes LT. I’ll let you know how it works. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for your reply Walter. It is interesting to here from you that internal SATA is slow. Sounds like if I want high performance and protection, I need to go RAID. AND I should also have a backup drive to back up the RAID. Wow…lots of equipment to keep the boat afloat.

Thanks for that post David and clarifying the “back-up” and “protected” confusion.

RAID seems to be the right choice here, but I have a speed connection question. Maybe you can help me here Jared? From CalDigit’s description on the performance of the HD Element, it has a read speed of 340 mbs and write speed of 290 mbs. This may be a very novice question, but wouldn’t firewire 800 give me a faster connection, read and write? What about e-sata at up to 3 gbs? Is a RAID card necessary? Couldn’t I purchase a RAID system that hooks up via e-sata or firewire?

I can’t wait to hear my doubts put to bed here! It seems most professionals go the RAID route for protection and large capacity storage.

Are you saying you had four clips in your multiclip? I have three clips in my multiclip and still can’t figure out why it won’t play smoothly.

I didn’t have the realtime scopes displayed while I was playing the multiclip. I’ll try turning them off, if that helps anything in the background.

I’ve been considering a RAID solution for all of my footage. Is this something I can do when I have files on the harddrive currently?

Does anyone else have any speculation on why I can’t play back this multiclip? I would also be curious to hear from someone who edits multiclips with three DVCPROHD clips or more and their hard drive or RAID set-up.

Maybe rather than transferring my existing files on bay 2 and 3 to a RAID, I purchase an external hard drive to back up those files? Then for my future projects I use a RAID 5 set-up? You don’t see using a RAID 5 set-up as a back-up solution? I thought doing a RAID 5 would be best than having an additional external hard drive to back up what is on the RAID. Since every drive WILL fail, doesn’t it make sense to store everything in a RAID system and replace the drives that fail in that over time?

Tell me if I am efficient or not here on my work flow. I shoot on P2, create a copy of those cards in my archive folder. I then ingest the footage in log and transfer. Edit the project. When it is finished I delete the footage I ingested in L&T used in that project in the captured scratch folder to save space on the drive.

I’m running out of space mainly from all of my archived footage on the drives.

Thanks Patrice. The data rate for these three clips are around 14 MB/sec. When looking in the viewer outside Final Cut these clips are around 118,000 bit rate.

I’m typically doing a lot of projects like this…three cam shoot with HVX 200 with DVCPROHD. I’ve filled about 85% of bay 2 (where this footage currently is) and bay 3 is filled 90%. I’m about to run out and purchase another internal to fill bay 4, but before I do I’m wondering at this point if I should invest in a 8 bay RAID system like this from Cal Digit (https://www.caldigit.com/HDElement/). I’ll call them and ask my technical questions if this can support large data rate multiclips. But my question is…is this a typical setup for one who is run out of room on the internal bays.

Also, is there any other work around for me dealing with these clips?

The footage is stored on my internal drive in bay 2 of my mac pro. It is an internal SATA drive.

I set it to dynamic as well and it is still choppy. I’m watching my activity monitor while this is playing back, and under disk activity the data read/sec reads to a maximum of 35 mbs. Is this normal? I’m dealing with HD footage so I’m wondering if the disk I have is not good enough for reading a file with a high data rate. Would this have anything to do with it? How can I fix this? One of the clips’ bit rate is 118,239.
