This is strange and interesting. You formatted both cards before the shoot. I’m assuming you have two different cards, one for each camera. And there were no issues at the end of the shoot? Was a camera turned off while the recording was taking place? If not, then the only thing I can think of it that this has to be the card. The fact that you have two completely different cameras with different folder structures unable to read to your computer, has to be the card. Maybe the is ghost data on these cards that just isn’t getting wiped when you format.

The color space is 4.2.2, regardless if you are recording internally or externally. Unless you use the raw recorder which will do 4.4.4. So to answer your question which the two choices you have, it doesn’t matter in the sense of color space. It’s a question of compression vs noise.
I’ve been recording 4K ProRes 422HQ for most jobs and cutting in a 1080 timeline and have found the results to be great. We did some testing between the internal codec and ProRes, honestly it was hard to see the difference. The XAVC codec works really well. I like the ProRes because it is easier on our machines to handle. I hope that’s closer to answering your question 🙂

This sounds like a job for the fs7. It would fit the budget, super 35 sensor, internal nd, full 4k, awesome slow motion. I would go for that and even pair it with an a7s for low light.

Hi Martin,
The FS7 will record 4.2.2 internally. I suppose you could record RAW with an external recorder, but I find 4.2.2 fantastic for most work. Having a record for this is even better and would reduce a little noise, but I don’t think it would be that noticeable. It is nice working with the ProRes codec rather than the compressed file. If I were you, I’d rent the pro-res recorder. They aren’t much to rent and you would have nice clean footage to work with within a pro res wrapper.

If you orient the slider vertical (and be sure you do this safely), I think that would give you the most realistic move. The jib has a natural arch, it pushes slightly forward and then comes back. The slider moves just like you would if you were sinking, strait down.
Set the slider with a motor vertically with a duration of 10 minutes and it will capture it perfectly.
I’m still not totally clear how you are using this. Is this for a game or virtual reality?

Hi Tom,
What is the purpose of your shot and how are you using it? A 10 minute shot sure is long and I’m curious why.
I agree with Mark, you need to go with an electronic motor to do this properly. The set-up depends on the camera you would be using. If you are using something light-weight like an a7s, 5d, you could use a 5′ kessler slider with the second shooter. Or you could use the rhino motion to achieve something similar. Shooting a wider lens will also make the move seem bigger, so could potentially get away with 5′. But then again, I’m not sure how this is being used in your video.

I suppose it is mostly a cinematography reel. I’ve always had my full length edits posted on vimeo and my website. My intent was to create a reel that would poke some interest. I’ll make another pass on the edit based the comments I received.
Thanks for the insight Terry. I always enjoy you answers!

Thanks for the feedback Nick. I do have Stedicam shots, but they are mostly weddings. I haven’t had the opportunity to use bigger moves with dollies, maybe someday.
Cool history with the radio station! Must have drank a lot of coffee…
