  • I work for a small shop and needed to get our HD transition right the first time. After much consideration and research, I chose the EX series. It has been a dream. The transition of our workflow has been pretty much seamless. The quality of the footage is mind-blowing compared to DV/DVCAM. Working tapeless has been fantastic, and some newer members of our company who don’t have decades involved in working with tape actually prefer working with the Clip Browser and XDCAM Transfer apps.

I haven’t worked with HDV, but the people I asked about it beforehand described it as a pain in the butt. Having gone straight to shooting “true” HD, square pixels, efficient and solid codec, I don’t have an personal comparisons to make. I just knew that, having gone from broadcast to DV/DVCAM, I wasn’t about to have anything to do with any DV variant ever again if I could help it. I’m glad I waited.

I keep punctured bicycle inner tubes for this kind of stuff, you can slice a piece of rubber off ’em and use them for wraps when you need a spacer. You don’t have to deal with the sticky mess of tape, it absorbs a little bit of vibration, and it doesn’t introduce any noise into the mix.

  • If you shoot SDHC for everything but overcrank, the use of a Sony USB reader won’t be too big a workflow bottleneck. I’ve never considered it terribly slow.

I’ve done a lot of green screen work with our EX cameras, and I like 720P30 for standard def DVD when working with talking heads.

Are they no longer doing the free SxS card rebate with the EX cameras? I did that on our EX1 and EX3 and they were handled pretty quickly.

Good rule. Besides, it doesn’t matter how good of an excuse the producer or anyone else has…either the card works or it doesn’t. Time spent screwing around trying to make it work is billable, that’s something that may penetrate the fog in a hurry.

It sounds like you did what we all would probably consider our instinct: iron out that detail in advance. It also looks like we techies aren’t the only ones that need to embrace some new conventions with tapeless!

That software was probably Genuine Fractals. I’ve never tried it myself, but I’ve seen rave reviews of it for years.

Yeah, it seems like print people can’t wrap their heads around the idea that DPI only matters on paper.

“When you’ve got family… everything else is extra”

    Amen to that.

If I remember correctly, installing the plugin and then selecting “Import>Sony XDCAM…” in FCP will launch the XDCAM Transfer app. Then you select the clips/subclips you want to import, select which open FCP project you want to send them to, and hit Import. Then the files appear in your bin as they’re rewrapped to MOV.

I haven’t done that in a while since we have a dedicated iMac/RAID for our raw footage, and the MOVs are put into a shared dropbox folder for the editors to grab to their local machines.

In any case, I have to say the process is quite slick.
