I’ve been able to do some pretty impressive rescue work on EX footage I was given that was…well, not good.

Yeah, I bought it (and the Calibrated MP4 codec) last week, I’m customizing some user fields and verifying my folder layout before I start ingesting footage into it. This also is going to coincide with archiving BPAV folders to XDCAM discs.

Fantastic! I just bought CatDV after working with the 30-day demo and am in the process of customizing fields and preparing to ingest our XDCAM EX footage. Hopefully I’ll be able to contribute here along the way.

By the way, we received one of these things in the mail the other day, containing some footage for a project we’re working on. It was in one of those blow-molded style cases (with the sliding latch) for a 5 minute Betacam tape. It fit PERFECTLY. Of course, we don’t have any of that style of case, so I’m hunting for a couple of ’em. The ones for S and 3/4″ don’t work; the drive rattles around inside of them.

We use ours as an in-field backup. From its size I’d say it has a laptop hard drive in it. I don’t think I’d care to edit from it if I could avoid it, due to caution rather than hard data.

I’m confused…if you had an SxS card fail, how did you plug it into an SD card or Nikon DSLR? Did you have an SD card fail using an MxR or MxM adapter?

As a still photographer, I was tickled to see the histogram display on the EX cameras. I use it in Photoshop and on my still camera as well. If you really want to find out a lot about this, you can perform a web search in that context (photography or Photoshop) since it’s probably been covered a lot better there. Ron’s suggestions were right-on, and as with anything it’d be good advice to make sure you get a little more detailed understanding of the tool in order to use it best.
