I still have a working VHS deck and then I used a ADVC55 Grass Valley/Thompson which took analog in and put out a digitized firewire stream and then just captured directly into FCPX. The inspector calls is DV/DVCPRO-NTSC 720 x480.

I didn’t see a specification for the amount of RAM. At least in the earlier days, not enough RAM caused slowdowns. I have 16 GB, but many use 32 GB.

I would like to learn some color grading, beyond what is achievable in FCPX. Not ready to invest a huge amount. Thinking of adding DaVinci Resolve Lite, which is free, as a step in that direction. I’ve read it has a steep learning curve, would this be a useful first step??

Here is a totally of the wall suggestion. Check if you have an itunes account and if the password is working. I find Apple messing me up with iCloud when it wants to check my itunes password.

Look in the library and see what files are being generated. It is probably making some large optimized media files, that you may be able to work without. Check your import settings.

For cheap drives and deep backup I like the USB3. I have a kanex Thunderbolt to USB3 converter which does a good job with getting USB3 into my 2011 (no USB3 port) Mac. USB2 is really slow these days.

That ratio, about 10 to 1 was what I used to get importing AVCHD back when it converted the AVCHD into ProRes. With FCPX and a new mac in 2011, I have been able to use the AVCHD files without converting. Maybe there are some settings in FCPX that can be changed at import time. My Canon XA20 records AVCHD at about 26 Mbs and that runs about 10 GB/hour on the memory card and on the imported files.

Is it possible that the fourth camera was recording MP4 and not AVCHD. If so, the clips show up on different files on the XA10. I think the MP4’s are in the DCIM folder. That is also where it stores the photos.
Just a thought.
