Nope, never got an answer or a ‘real’ solution, and it happens on two different Macs, one at Tiger (now upgraded to Snow Leopard…still happens), and another one at Snow Leopard.

I bought a program called “GraphicConverter” (LemkeSoft – $40) which does almost instant batch processing and just convert any large section of stills that aren’t working into TIF files. The converted files always import fine.

For audio files that give the error, I use QT Pro (for one or two files) or iTunes (for batches) to convert to AIF files. Again, the converted files always import fine. (Even MP3s that seem to import OK can still get weird in FCP, so I almost always convert to AIF anyway.)

Not a ‘real’ solution by any means, but it does allow me to actually work.

I’m hoping the real fix is coming this month with a new version of FCP coming out, bug free and perfectly stable in all respects. And I’ll ride to work on my unicorn.

Well, I found out that if you drag a problem file to the FCP icon in the dock rather than into a bin (or just using normal File/Import) that instead of the generic “Unknown file” error you get a more specific one.

In my case, every problem AIFF, JPEG, WAV, etc. file that won’t import comes up with the error “Text file too large: text file size limit is 1MB.” (This may not be the exact wording of the error as I’m not in front of the system right now.)

I can’t find ANYTHING on that error (even when worded exactly as seen on screen).

No, these are not unusual files in any way I can see. They come from a variety of sources, all of which used to import fine before upgrade.

If anyone else has this same importing problem…do you get the same “Text file” error if you drag file to FCP dock icon?

Really hating this, as people are coming in with camera cards with hundreds of pictures that need to be converted before import.

It’s been about a month since my last post. I’ve upgraded to the latest on everything (FCP, etc.) and I still have JPEGs and WAVs and AIFFs that play fine on the computer (and are NOT reference movies), files that should easily import, and I have to open up and re-save each one of them before they’ll work in FCP. Such a hassle, especially when people hand me entire cards filled with pictures and we just want to ‘look thru them on the big screen.’

ANYONE find an answer for this one?

I am having very similar problems with a Kona 3 card.

Just upgraded from Tiger/FCP 6 to Snow Leopard/FCP 7 on Mac Pro 3GHz Quad Core – 4GM RAM. Have always used the fast CalDigit HDONE for storage.

Before the upgrade, no problems. After upgrade, very similar problems to your #2 and #3 (in your original post).

Going thru empty spaces on timeline doing just as you say, video on desktop running in sync, but output thru Kona 3 is delayed by quite a bit (about 1.5 seconds). This is a ProRes HQ 1080 23.98 sequence using XDCAM footage that was converted to QT in Sony XDCAM Transfer tool.

Also getting random times when video is just black output. Takes a bit of opening other sequences, randomly scrubbing thru them, then it so far has always come back.

I had absolutely no problems like this before the upgraded OS/FCP. And of course, this means new Kona drivers as well.

–I had been outputting my ProRes HQ sequence as (Video Playback in the ‘Audio/Video Settings) “1080psf23.98 8 bit.” When I changed to the same, but “10 bit,” most of the problems seemed to go away.

–Also, I had the “Playback Video Quality” on the timeline set to “Dynamic” (which I’m used to doing). When I set that to “High” only (all other choices never worked), most of the problems seemed to go away, in either 8 bit or 10 bit playback.

NOT fully tested, but that’s what I’ve just seemingly found out. Good to know someone else having same issues (sorry, but it is).

Had you upgraded recently? Our AJA devices are different, but our problems are very similar.

Yep, I just upgraded to FCP 7 / Snow Leopard and can not import “easy” files into FCP like wav, aif, and jpg (for starters). I’ve also only found that re-saving from a different program on the same Mac works. What a step backwards. If anyone knows a fix for this, please let us all know.

…Also, we are using the Pro discs. Does Log & Transfer work, or the XDCAM Transfer Tool?

Sorry if this is beating a dead horse, but before I upgrade I would love one more question answered authoritatively:

With Snow Leopard and FCP 7 (both of which I’m about to upgrade to from Tiger and FCP 6), can I use my Sony U1 for importing clips? I don’t need to write back to it (at this point), but are all the kinks worked out as far as Snow Leopard, the U1 and connectivity/importing? I haven’t found the clearest answer to this, if there is a clear answer.
