You could patch the tape deck’s output to the Mac’s analog input and use Quicktime Pro’s audio recording option, then import into FCP. You may need to re-export from QT Pro (or go through iTunes) to have the resulting file be AIFF 48kHz to keep FCP happy.
There are also a few third-party share/freeware apps to do this. Search Versiontracker.com or macupdate.com.
Or, as suggested, get a simple analog to USB audio interface for digital capture and use the above to record.

    Some things to try:
-Click on your desktop, go to Menu “View”> “Show View options”. In the options window, if checked, UN-check the box “Keep arranged by.”
-Open the external drive, select ICON view, click inside its finder window, and do the same as above.
-Click the external drive icon. Cmd-I or File>Get Info. If un-checked, Check the box “Ignore ownership on this volume”

Umatic was originally conceived as a home or consumer format, but its size and cost for tapes and gear were a bit out of reach for most consumers.
When Porta Pack “portable” machines and relatively small cameras became available, Umatic was very widely adopted for Electronic News Gathering (ENG), to replace 16mm for this purpose, and remained in use for many years, so as such it did make “network” air.
Long after other formats came into use, 3/4″ Umatic remained as an exchange medium for review, since pretty much every ad agency and tv station had a machine somewhere around. Also for many years, and maybe still true in some areas, cable TV providers used 3/4″ for local origination playout.
It’s The Format That Won’t Die.

That really should not be a problem, unless the record decks are set to External Reference (which can be switched to reference to input video), or if the video is just very unstable. Better approach would be to get ahold of a TBC or framesync.

From your description, it sounds like in System Preferences > Displays, your monitor resolution setting is defaulting to a lower value than it had been set at for your display.
It also sounds like your “update” process was flawed. You may end up needing to do a full OS re-install. There have been many posts in this forum and in the FCP forum about bulletproof ways to do this correctly to avoid problems.
Search the COW for OS X install wisdom.

System Preferences>Energy Saver. The “Schedule” button on the “Sleep” pane lets you set a time for the computer to shut down. Select Every Day or individual days, weekends only, weekdays only.

December 30, 2009 at 10:54 pm in reply to: TV spot fade out?

I doubt that any MCR switcher would add a fadeout to anything. In many facilities, MCR is highly automated. Your spot is an element in a playlist. At the appointed time, source plays out of server, goes to air. At the end of the logged time slot, next source plays out, goes to air, without human intervention. If you want a fadeout, put one in, and, as suggested, finish it a frame or two early so it really goes fully to black.

The SD playback looks pretty good here, even at “full screen.” Could not view the HD version as my G4 just can’t handle it. Happy Holidays!

MacJanitor allows a user to perform clean up of system database and log files that are done automatically on machines that are left on 24/7, but it does not operate on any cache files. A free system maintenance utility like Onyx will perform all the tasks suggested plus many others.

What does the output video from the BVU950 look like on a scope, before it hits the Formac? Are video and chroma at nominal levels? It’s possible you could be sending too high or low levels to the Formac, which then goes and makes DV out of it. Do you have access to a proc amp or TBC, maybe clean things up a bit on the way out?
