Hey Dan, just wanted to chime in to let you know you aren’t alone. It had gotten so bad for me that I resorted to profanities and disparaging comments about the mothers of the Vegas 9 design team one night while filling out over a dozen crash reports. I can tell you that I just got Adobe CS5 up and running with a Quadro 3800 card and when it comes to hd editing, it blows Vegas 9 out of the water!

Don’t get me wrong I REALLY MISS the Vegas workflow, but whenever I would import anything beyond the most basic of AVI video, like you it would stutter, freak out, and crash. I still use it on occasion when I need to knock out something very basic, but when I really need reliability and power, I find myself using Premiere more and more.

I had been using Vegas exclusively for at least the past ten years, and now with all of the bugs in Vegas 9, and after investing so much to build a 64-bit system, I AM DONE WITH VEGAS! It seems like every version promises more and more, but delivers less and less.

Adobe really got it right with Premiere 5, I want everyone who is having major Vegas 9 issues to know that you are not alone, and give CS5 a chance!

I was not up to speed on the 50. I thought you meant 450. Thats a neat little switcher and it looks like it will fit the bill. The Edirol runs around $6k so this is certainly the cheapest of the hd switchers.

I think Edirol makes the cheapest HD switchers but they are still a couple of thousand dollars out of your budget I’m afraid. If you can raise the money, I own an HS-400 and I certainly would recommend it. Just hook it up to an HD monitor and you’re up and running.

Thanks for the detailed answer Martin, you have certainly put my mind at ease about being a Westerner filming in the seemingly hostile Far East country. Since I will be with an American muscial group, I am assuming we will be more welcome by local authories so as long as I ‘Mind my “P’s & Q’s” I don’t think I’ll have any issues. This is my first overseas trip, and if I forget something I am guessing I can’t just run out to a “Radio Shack” or “Wal-mart” to find what I need the way I can in America.

    Thanks for responses guys.

Patrick: That sandbag story is slightly creepy, but I get your point things are A LOT different over there.

Walter: I’m hearing this may be a state (Embassy) sponsored or endorsed tour, so at the very least hopefully they’ll know I’m coming and MAY be more helpful under those circumstances, but I’ll certainly ask about needing a “handler”. I also think a meeting with the local consulate is definitely in order especially to make sure all of my equipment can go over, and I have filled out all of the proper forms so it all makes the return trip with me.

Just a follow up; I double checked the specs, and I am figuring about 6 -7 frame delay with the switcher frame sync, and the 2 converters, so you can expect at least a quarter second delay possibly as high as a half second depending on the other equipment in your air chain.

Billy, I just went through something very similar with a church I work with. I can tell you that I personally se ALL AJA converters, and other then being slightly tricky to make sure they are set up properly, I have had zero issues with them. My guess would be after all is said and done, you will be introducing less than a second, maybe 15 frames or so delay with all of the converting going on. Depending on how much compression/tools your audio mixer uses in the audio chain, that may be just about the same delay that is introduced when you send audio through a digital mixer, Compressor, feedback destroyer, etc… So you may be surprised to find your video and audio will be close to being in sync.

Sounds like you are headed in the right direction, the last thing I would put out to you, is that I was recently looking for both an HD recorder to go along with the new HD mixer, as well as a down converter to tie it into the house feed. Well guess what does both of those all in one? The Ki Pro. It has just about any output you need, and saves you needing a separate $1k down converter.

June 8, 2010 at 2:04 pm in reply to: Best PTZ camera for live music acts?

In addition to Walter’s advice, I have found that if you try and find a local rep. for the larger companies (Sony, Panasonic, etc…) you might be able to get an in-house demo, visit a local dealer showroom for a demo session, or maybe even visit a club or church that has a similar installation and get some first hand information. I still say budget first…Nothing worse than finding the “perfect” camera, only to find out it’s out of your price range.

I think the sensors won’t really be an issue, but someone else may want to chime in on that. I would say to start by finding a camera in your price range with the features you are looking for and start building a system based around that? If you are having trouble see if Sony and Panasonic have a “Compare models” feature on their site, and that should at the very least help you start narrowing down your search.

If you have the funds, I’m looking at the Panasonic PTZ cameras that can be operated by a Panasonic 400 switcher. Also I have worked with several groups using Sony and other brands. There are a lot of systems out there, I think $$$ is going to be your deciding factor. Watch E-bay maybe you’ll find a package cheap?
