I’m going to second Greg on this one. All of you are basing your arguments on the fact that you believe that most of your clients care more about quality then economy. His point is that many of his clients are going to grab their i-phones and i-pads and start cutting their own crappy video because now they have the tools to do so. It doesn’t matter that they don’t have proper audio, lighting, scripting, because… It’s cheaper than hiring Greg!

We had this exact same discussion in the FCP-X posts earlier this week.

Now on that we can both agree Neil. The first day I was at NAB this year I was near the Sony booth when a guy walked by shooting with an ipad mounted on a shoulder rig with a giant you know what kind of grin on his face.

I swear to you Neil I was so disgusted I almost vomited right there. I then walked over to a quiet spot in the corner and booked a flight home to Chicago that same night…trust me I know how you feel about the future of this industry…

You’re right Neil… Now your clients can shoot video on an i-phone, edit on their i-pad, one day they’ll decide they don’t need you any more; you’ll just say “Well it’s just keeping up with the times”

Thanks for the explanation Walter. With the lines between professional and amateur severely blurred, I can see how they would want to market a more Adobe-esqe all-in-one solution that would appeal to the masses who want to feel like they are purchasing above average editing tools.

I just don’t understand why they would do this at the expense of their core of professional users? Guess the $$$ trumps loyalty.

Wait a second, back the truck up, I have a few questions…

As a PC guy who has never used FCP, don’t own an i-anything (never will) I’m not up to speed on the Mac-anomics of this situation. Are you telling me the they pulled the Professional version of Final Cut, because they released a new Prosumer (lite) version of the software?

That sounds like another case of welding the battery into case so you need to buy a new cell phone… I don’t mean to be critical, but I really don’t get why you guys put up with this stuff from Mac?

But again, that’s why I don’t own any of their products, shop at Wal-Mart, etc…

  • I was using the term “bungee” loosely. Here is more like what I was speaking of.

    or even these

It just depends on your outfit, and what you can hook in to.

Again I know the epoxy sounds extreme, but there is an article I read recently about the guys that shoot “The Deadliest Catch” and they talk about how they prep their cameras for shooting out on deck.

  • You know I was at a computer store the other day and bought these “bungee cords” attached to plastic loops. I picked them up for the same general purpose as you need them, I would see if you can find something like that, mini carabineer clips, or even another favorite of mine “Bongo Ties”. Any should make a sufficient strain relief.

  • I have used even longer firewire cables, that distance shouldn’t be a problem. What will be a problem however is keeping the cable plugged in, considering firewire cables don’t exactly make the most positive connection. An extreme solution would be to epoxy the hell out of the connector to the camera/computer, but another option maybe a strain relief or something like that.

I believe you are correct Bob it must have been a PVW series, but that was in jest Jay…Please don’t drill holes in your deck!

As always Bob is 110% correct, and I completely agree with everything he has told you.

Depending on your setup, I always had a 1RU 4 channel audio mixer that we would always mount in the rack with the 1800’s, I think they are around $100.
