If you shot in P2 format on the FS-100, you have to “Organize Clips” under the “Utilities” Menu. Then you import into FCP using “Log and Transfer” just like P2 cards. If shot in Quicktime mode, just drag them into your FCP bin and start editing.

Yes sometimes MAC worship makes you blind to computer programming and hacking reality.

I guess it all depends on how much time, effort and money you are willing to throw into a project that no one will ever see. On a positive note, I guess you could call it practice for creating a real documentary further down the line.

“Editing wise, go with Apple. Can’t understand why anyone in their right mind would trust professional production work to a PC!”
Boy is this a loaded statement. Discreet Logic’s edit* was on a PC. The most expensive Avid is on a PC, Adobe’s CS4 on a PC runs circles around the MAC version. As a matter of fact, unless Apple gets its act together with a substantially more powerful desktop system and a complete rewrite of FCP, I’m going back to a PC!

December 19, 2008 at 12:42 am in reply to: Client relationship in jeopardy – help!It is so funny to see this topic come up again and again on this forum (do a search and spend a few days reading), with the same people always espousing the same views. I started out as a still image photographer, where you ALWAYS own what you shoot, AND the negatives, AND the client pays for your time AND all materials. If they want to own the negatives, they pay more. Unless you sign a “work for hire,” you own the raw footage. If I shoot something for free for anyone (especially non-profits), I definitely own the footage. Depending on the pay scale and job, those criteria dictate whether I will relinquish the footage or not, but always with the stipulation that I must be credited for the footage. It is just plain silly (and wrong) to call this practice “unethical.” The bottom line is always make sure where you and your client stand before committing to a project, and have a signed contract in place to back you up. That being said, anyone can sue anybody for anything in the good ole’ U.S. and usually the deep pockets win, regardless of who is right or wrong, even if you do have a contract!

Actually good Windows machines will always have faster processors and better graphic card selections for any rendering, 3d work or processor intensive work. The problem is, you aren’t going to find these machines at your local Best Buy. You need to buy and configure them from a place like Boxx technologies. I still use Apple machines for all my FCP HD work, but now that Adobe CS4 has come out and it is definitely tweaked for Vista, I have been wavering in my desire to stick with Apple. Unless they come out soon with a much better machine and a massively rebuilt FCP engine, I may have to move back over to the “dark side.”

Actually TGAs can definitely (and definitely do) save as 32 bit (8 bit alpha, 24 bit color)files. Some apps don’t recognize the alpha from the TGA format however. I have always had to use PNGs with alpha in FCP for instance.
