Judging from the responses thus far, it looks like the 5D MKII isn’t the best option. lol : P

I am looking at Canadian pricing, but it looks like you would want to go with the 7D body as opposed to the 5D MK II if you are looking to use your 4k to get that wish list all in one pop.

Also, if you are looking to get all those items, I would say spend your money on an “as needed” basis. I think buying everything at once could possibly lead to having a few items that you won’t use very often, but felt you would at the time of purchase.

Looking at your list, it could be a bit difficult to get all that with 4k. Do you have any lighting or lenses in mind that you were leaning towards? Or are you looking for DIY lighting?

Yes, the 1.4 is much better. I didn’t mention it because it sounded like you were on a tight budget.

For simple sound, use the H4N, or Sennheiser MKE400, or Rode Videomic Pro. Don’t use the internal mic.

The 18-55 isn’t a very fast or sharp lens. In the night shots, you will need to crank up the sensitivity of the sensor to get enough “light” to the sensor. That will create more noise and lower the video’s overall quality.

That being said, it doesn’t sound like you will be up against the hardest panel of judges. If they won’t notice the noise, than there is no point in fighting it.

If you can get yourself the 50mm 1.8, it will be a lot faster. There is a shitty little focus ring on it, so manually focusing is tough, but for tripod shots with little action in the scene, it will help at night more. It’s $139.99 CDN.

For your purposes, the 18-55 will probably suffice. I’d personally feel better with more options.

  • Thanks for the wealth of information! If I have any specific questions or footage to share I will pass them along in the thread.

  • Thanks Rick. I assumed there were no hard and fast rules as usual with lighting.

With regards to clothing, do you mean if someone has a white shirt (or any very bright colour), you may want to flag the light that is reaching their shirt?
