As far as there being a benefit, yes, there’s always a benefit to using an external recorder. I use a Canon 7D, unfortunately I don’t have manual control over Audio Levels nor can I shut off the AGC like the 5Dm2 can. You get cleaner audio from using an external recorder, you can monitor it, better controls, etc.
As far as the H2 and the 5Dm2 paired, I can’t say. I do personally use the H2 with my 7D and it works great. The H2 isn’t the ideal recorder though…an H4N would be better, XLR inputs…the H2 was suitable for me because I moved from an Sony VX2100 which all mic inputs were mini…that’s mostly what I have, so the H2 is great for those.
If you’ve got the cash and haven’t bought the H2 yet, maybe save for an H4N. The H2 is a solution that I use, it works, syncing is easy (just make sure to slate or clap before recording) and it does work great, but for that perfect audio solution I’d get an alternative with XLR.

Yeah, the “cheapies” under $100 are what I’m talking about. The one specifically on BH is the DiCAPac Wp-S10…very very similar to the EWA Marine brand, a brand I’m familiar with, but a fraction of the cost. Brand new from BH it’s under $90.
I’m just looking to see if anyone has experience with it…good or bad that can say a direct “yes” or a direct “no.” I don’t foresee myself diving anytime soon, so depth isn’t important. If I go less than 10 feet that’s pushing it. I’m looking for something I could use for quick water surface shots that show some underwater footage, something I can take on my honeymoon, etc.
Wasn’t sure if I should go for high quality footage from a high quality camera, in an inexpensive housing, or rock a water proof 1080p30, whose footage just looks “okay.” The handycam is something I could use down the line to as a regular home video camera as well…
Just looking for good advice on this.

I’ve ordered a mattebox and some mounting options from them a while ago. I had absolutely no problems with them! The customer service is prompt and shipping is quick! (my order was placed on a Tuesday, I received it in Columbus, OH that Friday)
I wouldn’t hesitate ordering again!

December 2, 2010 at 3:51 pm in reply to: Does 5D + Magic lantern + Juicedlink pre-amp = audio capture success?I have the 7D, and usually only pay attention to the firmware upgrades for that, so someone correct me if I’m wrong on this…
Didn’t the 5Dmii firmware upgrade not long ago give 5Dmii owners full control over audio levels, defeating the purpose of Magic Lantern’s audio controls?
If you went the Juice Linked route for audio, I would assume you wouldn’t need Magic Lantern’s hack…just plug the pre-amp right into the camera.
-EDIT:
Just saw what you wrote about Magic Lantern’s feature about turning the camera’s jack into a headphone jack. My apologies.————-

Jonathan,
Like you said, the Landscape picture style (in this case) was probably all you needed. That looked phenomenal without color correction…great shot! I wish we had nicer landscapes like that up here in Columbus.
I see what you’re talking about, and I think it may just be the generic line issue the Canon DSLRs have altogether combined with the detail of the rippling of the water. I must say, because I was looking for it, I found it more distracting in the color corrected version of Stu’s picture style settings. The un-color corrected versions look fine, it’s just when that detail is enhanced when it comes out.

June 11, 2010 at 2:13 pm in reply to: Canon 7D – battery life and charging timeI too have yet to buy more batteries for the 7D, but the stock battery, on and off recording, turning the camera on and off to save power, I got about 2.5 hours out of it. Never really timed how long it takes to recharge, so I can’t help you there.

I actually purchased this exact box, not from eBay but from their actual retail front at https://www.thecinecity.com.
It’s not bad. The flag, mounts and parts of the box are all aluminum or sheet metal, but the actual box is hard plastic. It comes in 3 pieces, the mounts, flag and box. The mount just screws onto the front of the lens where a filter would go, and the box tightens around it.
Now, they have it mounted to a VX2100 in the picture. I will say this…it is better suited for a fixed lens camera. I bought it and 2 mounts, one for my 7D and one for my VX2100. When trying to focus with the 7D, it adds weight to the lens if it breaths while focusing and makes focusing a bit tougher. Since it can be untightened quickly from the mount, it’s best to focus, then tighten it back on.
As for the company, they were great! Correspondence through e-mail was fine, shipping was a bit high, but it is coming from over seas. The good thing with shipping from them is it took 3 days. I can order stuff 2 hours away from me and it could take a week or 2. I ordered on a Tuesday evening, I got it Friday morning.
Hope that helps!
