CS5 will import P2 files and work with them native.
Open media browser from w/i APP and nav to the Folder with the P2 files.
Play or drag files into Proj. bin. Drag on to new sequence icon and edit.

Instead of STP, open compressor.
Import the sound files that are not optimized for FCP.
Use the audio preset:

Then click on settings and change to best:

Then import newly created files back into FCP.

You can you copy and paste if need be for the clips in the sequence already.

That is not a slide in text box.
They just did a mask wipe.
In your motion prop – apply crop. Animate.

Start with easy setup dv ntsc 29.97
Is your SD material Mini DV?

When the edit is done and complete, change your sequence settings to 8 bit uncompressed and re-render fully.

Then, export quicktime using “Current Settings”
Take that file into your compression program to create the deliverables.

Are you viewing this on an ext. video monitor?

Clip codec/framerate/size?
Sequence codec/framerate?
Camera used?

Always turn it off when on sticks.
Turn it on for hand-held.

You should ask them if DV50 is ok. If they can read Prores, they can read dv50. This will save a small generation step.
But, to answer your question.

YES.

Use compressor on the MBP.
