Is there any other less costly solutions. I definitely agree that this is something the studio should invest in. However for the time being I don’t believe it is an option.
Since the live capture is not necessary would it be smarter to just invest in P2 cards for the time being?
I’m not sure why they are set up capturing live at the moment..all i know is I dont think Imovie is not the proper software to be using when trying to capture clear HD footage to key out.

Thanks for the advice.Yea I figured that was the case. I definitely didn’t expect to get anywhere close to what we see on the tri caster.(i wish!)
So I guess it seems that the best thing to do now is switch to capturing via FCP so they can capture ProRes? (which Imovie can not do)I can do that via firewire right?

Right, that’s what I thought. Currently the studio is utilized in 2 ways.
1. Shooting an internet TV show with a Tri-caster that pre keys the video for them(in real time) and replaces it with a background of their choice.
2. Shooting talent on a green screen with a sony hdr-Fx1. The final output being for the web (transparent layover video).
The process as of now is capturing the footage via imovie
Importing the files into AE, keying out footage
Exporting files to FLV with alpha.The main issues I am seeing is the low quality of the footage in Imovie compared to what I see on the tri caster.
Thats why I was concluding that Imovie must be the problem, and FC the solution.
It could be something else but I wanted to get everyone opinion before I do any tests.

The studio has Sony HDV digital HD camera recorder-HDR FX1

In order to capture ProRes in FCP do I need the aja io box or can I just do a live feed into FCP

Yea. Good point. These videos would be taken right into After Effects to be keyed out. In order to get a good key we need good quality footage 🙂 And with Imovie I think we’re losing some quality

hahah I figured it did limit us… is it mainly because Imovie is compressing the footage when it is captured..
I just started with this company so I am trying to get a feel for why they do the things they do. If there is logic behind it or if its just the only way they know. Alot of their footage that they shot though is mainly for web use only so it’s going to get compressed anyways. Nevertheless, I think we should have a high res version to get better results with keying.
