Wonderful, Bob. Sounds great now. Thanks for your help.

Now to figure out why I seem to remember using the LHe XLR’s out going into the Genelec speakers and it sounding great… (?)

I think I’m losing my mind.

    Thanks Bob & Paul Jay.

The Reference in the Control Panel is set to FreeRun.

I have tried monitoring a few ways:

    1. LHe into Mackie 1402-VLZ Pro Mixer, Mackie out XLR into Bryston 2BSST-17-SIL-120 amp balanced stereo 1volt XLR inputs, Amp out speaker wire into speakers. Toggling Mic/Line levels, applying trim or limiters on the mixer doesn’t help.

    2. LHe into Genelec 1029A powered speakers.

Just to eliminate the possibility of Line/Mic level mixups I put the LHe XLRs into a Sony-EX1 camera and jumped back and forth between Mic/Line inputs with headphones on. I’m able to achieve good levels on the camera’s meters, but it still sounds like it’s coming through a blown speaker.

I did notice a phantom switch on the Mackie – although it was off – I’m wondering if Paul Jay might be onto something? I’ll re-post if I learn anything…

    Chad –

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately the problem is persistent no matter what is being put through the card. wav, aif, or mp3s in FCP, video clips in quicktime, a disc in dvd player, a podcast in itunes, everything… it’s all equally hot & distorted.

It feels like something is goofy with the level of the analog audio signal coming through the XLR’s that I can’t pinpoint…
