You’re on the right track using the .ma file in AE. But you just need to use it right. It’s not something that can be simply explained here. Trust me, once you get it, it’s a perfect match.
Search for tutorials to get ma files working in AE. Personally I output 3D data to C4D and use C4D’s AE project creator to go from 3D tracker to AE but I used to use the .ma way and it works great once you wrap your head around it.

It seems to me that most of one sizes work is done in true 3D and composited in AE (as well as text overlays). One size’s work looks almost exactly like joost’s work (https://renascent.nl/) and he does almost all his work in Max with AE just for compositing and text.

Well no, just multiply 360 times .33 (118 degrees) and times .66(237.6 degrees) to get your rotation positions at which you attach the next layer.
So attach the 3 layers when the null is at 0 (zero), 118, then 237.6 respectively.

Un parent them. Zero them back out. When the null is at 0,0,0. Take your first layer and move it 100 pixels in X now parent it to the null. Move the playhead till the null is at 33.3% through the complete rotation and move the second layer 100 pixels in X then parent it. Now move the playhead till the null is 66.6% through the full turn and move the last layer 100 pixels in X then parent.
I’m no math whiz, but that seems like it would work.
