I’ve been using optical flow on the footage first and then conforming it afterwards from 60p to 30p (though the footage becomes jerky after a few seconds even if I don’t conform it afterwards).

I tried your suggestion and conformed it to 30p first, then ran it through optical flow at 40%, but the same thing happens… beautiful slow-mo for a couple of seconds and then it suddenly becomes jerky. I’m editing on a 2010 i7 MBP with 4gb of ram… which slows nearly to a halt when exporting the optical flow (paging out issue perhaps?)…. do you guys think it could be a lack of ram? The exported ProRes 422 LT files coming out are 500-1000mb in size.

I should probably upgrade to 8gb of ram anyways… but I’m curious to know if you guys think this is causing the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hey Jerry,

Thanks for your reply! I think you’re right, and I’ll be doing that for future projects… though I’m happy to report that using the “share” option in FCP 7.0.3 finally worked!! The original export using share/ prores created a huge 6GB file that was probably stuttering during playback because the data-rate was so high. I tried the share/ YouTube preset and it worked perfectly, smoothcam shots and all! I’m now using a custom preset to get what I would have normally chosen when exporting through Quicktime conversion. Life is good.
