I’ve just had the experience of AE cs5 & 5.5 rendering black only when attempting full 1920×1080 res output… lesser resolutions were fine.

To find the problem, after trying everything in the cCow forums here, I set my working view res to 100% (resulting in a black render) and then switched each layer in the comp off one at a time until I got a non-black result… this enabled me to trace the problem to a SOLID lyr with the Sapphire S_Clouds effect applied

To fix all i had to do was preCompose that layer with its effect and full-res rendering was successful once more

hope this helps any folk who happen to fall down a similar hole, and always on deadline of course 😉

yes all the green screen elements were filmed & captured RGB 444… I can output alot of the CG/VFX work from AE in 16bpc 4444 if it’s worth it in the end too

it’s a CG heavy treatment weaving the 1080 RGB green screen elements with 2D/3D animation, stock footage & CG/VFX all rendered @ 1080 ProRes 422 HQ

…or should I re-render @ 4444 – that is the question !?!

Thanks for that Shane… yes as I suspected re: compressed Bluray result.

I am looking to supply final master on HDCAM SR to allow for best big screen projection at live concerts etc…. in which case the ProRes 4444 would be worth the extra file size/thru-put… though client may opt to project from BluRay for convenience anyway

the 1080 RGB source are just the green screen raw footage… all the leg work is being done in AE and rendered out for final edit/sync in FCP

I’ve been outputting all my AE as ProRes HQ to FCP… but am considering RE-doing the “FINAL” renders from AE as PRORES 4444 with it’s 330 mbps if anyone can confirm this is really going to give me an edge over the 220 mbps PRORES HQ option.

i think i’m going to post this as a new topic so it gets a bit more attention

Actually given I shot this @ 1080p 4:4:4 on Sony F35s and am aiming to max out the Blu-Ray playback bitrate i think I’ll render out all my 16bpc After Effects comps as ProRes 4444, and hence my mastering FCP timeline and final outputs ProRes 4444 too.

What say ye?

why not PRORES HQ as pre-Bluray codec ???
