[Kevin Patrick] “I wasn’t sure myself, so I decided to take the Trial FCP X Exam. “
Where did you get the practice exam from? I’ve tried to find a place to buy it, but was told that you can only buy it from the FCP X Exam Store. I have a redemption code, but they make me enter my personal credit information anyway, even though I have no plans to buy another exam. Then I had to be careful not to accidentally get charged for the FCPX Trial Exam, when I already have a redemption code. And then, there is nobody at the FCPX Exam store who will talk to you about your billing problem, so you have to send in a form and wait 24 hours.
Seriously, though. I HATE that I need to pay and take the exam now, in the hopes that MAYBE someday it will become a relevant application for me to teach. And I disagree that this is PLENTY of time, just because this crappy software was released in June. The official book was not released until late September, leaving just over two months to study the material and get used to it. As far as I’m concerned, I’d be okay with not being certified on this current version of FCP X, but if you let your certification lapse, then you are stuck flying to NY or LA, and paying $1000+ to take the classes, just for the privilege of being able to pay to take the same exam.
In this “Do As We Say” era of Apple, I guess we just need to take, and stay in the game at least until “The Turn”. Frankly, though, I feel like I’m betting on pocket deuces, or worse.

I know others have probably suggested this, but why not train yourself on more than one system? With the exception of the Autodesk option, the other platforms are priced reasonably enough that you could get them all, especially if you can utilize some kind of academic discount (even taking a class at a community college would qualify you). And of course, there are the 30 day trials.
As a freelancer, it seems to me that you would clearly be most marketable if you could cut on them all. If you’re too busy with work to spend alot of time training, then there’s no real rush, right? But if you have some down time, why not become an expert on everything that someone might ask you to use? I run a digital media program at a small college, and I will literally teach the same students FCP7, FCPX, Premiere, and Avid this academic year (and a heavy dose of AE too).
I think that is the one advantage of the current uncertainty in the market. It creates a highly competitive market among the software companies, dropping the prices, and really driving development. In the end, I think we’ll all benefit from some cool new stuff.

Luckily, right before the release of FCPX, I had licensed both FCS 3 and CS5.5 Production Premium, meaning that I have FCP7, FCPX, and PP 5.5 to work with in my classes. We shoot exclusively DSLR for now, so I will give very brief coverage to FCPX in the intro class, just to cut some interview w B-roll. Then in the editing class, I will add both FCP and PP. Then in advanced editing, AE and Avid. What’s luck for me, is that our courses run on a 3.5 week block, so I can do a class on Avid all within the free trial period.

I think the point is to provide a place for industry professionals to compare notes on a controversial piece of software. There are many of us who needs to make some important decisions regarding budgets, workflow, or in my case, curriculum.
That doesn’t seem silly to me at all.

Is full-sized resolution absolutely necessary for your offline multi-cam edit? You could always recompress to an even smaller proxy codec (even if it isn’t one of the ProRes codecs), as long as it is iFrame. This might save you some space, and maybe even give you a little faster performance.

[David Roth Weiss] “I’m still waiting by my mailbox for a new version of the old brand with the original odor…”
Physical software in the mail?!?!? That’s so June 20th.

Not having made a disk image before, is this something I can just do via the Drive Utility in Snow Leopard? Also, what are your thoughts on going to Lion now? I have the codes, which are supposed to be good indefinitely, so I can wait if needed.

[Andrew Richards] ” Is it at all possible it was Apple’s UI designers studying how people use their software and seeking to remove barriers to common tasks?”
No it’s not. Having been on the inside, and understanding how the organization and Mr. Ubilous work, I can say that professional real-world feedback ranks very low on the priority list. Admittedly, it has been nearly 10 years since I’ve worked there, but my grapevine still tells me this is how things are done.
