When did you switch completely to using FCP for ALL of your projects?
“Hard to say; there was a bit of a crossfade. I think I bought my first Decklink/G5 combo in 2004. I’d been dabbling with FCP for 2 or 3 years previously, but in no way exclusively. I was probably all FCP by 2006, though I would still occasionally sit at other machines.

That’s a good point. Speaking from my own experience, I still prefer the versatility and editing experience of working in FCP7 to that of MC, X or PPro.
I contend that if Apple sold off the FCP/FCS package to someone else, who developed it into a 64-bit app (with cleaned-up cosmetics, but no changes to the functionality and user experience) – that they would lead the marketplace over ALL NLEs.

I totally agree with Oliver on this. I’m not returning to Avid in the sense that it once was my home. I used to use it some, but my own early NLE machines were Montage, D/Vision (Edit*), and Speed Razor. I’ve never regarded Avid as the mothership; it was just another NLE that I had to learn to use, and I have long resented the mistaken cosmology that many Avid-only folk share, thinking that they, alone, were present at the birth of the Universe.
FCP has never been, for me, a poor man’s Avid. I saw it as the best, most flexible editing software ever available. If it had a future, I’d still see it that way. I chose it–in fact, I switched platforms for it–because I really liked it, not because it was an affordable, near-Avid experience.
That’s not to say that there aren’t elements of MC or Premiere that I find superior to Legacy. Keyboard trimming is exceptional on the MC, as is its binning logic and structure; I really like that the bin is the basic structure level and not the project. Premiere has an interface that’s even more fluid as Legacy, which bugs some, but thrills me.

Shane, I don’t know how you use Motion, but for me the combo of Animatte and Red (AvidFX) offer quite an overlap with Motion.

I guess I’ll add to this by letting anyone who doesn’t know, that you can download a fully functional trial version from Avid if you so desire. I have to say, I’ve been enjoying my time back on it.

I couldn’t agree more. Though I’m pretty partial to Scorsese as well. Oh, and Billy Wilder. Could we please be doomed to watch only four filmmakers? Lean! How about five? Well, and Welles.

Somehow I came across on Vimeo (of all places) and saw it on there. Can’t find it anymore though.
“I got to the Kubrick chapter in the Ronson book. It was terrific, and deals with all of the boxes and his sorting through them. I’m guessing that the contents of the exhibit come from some of those boxes.
The museum is screening all his films in order, and this weekend I got to see Fear and Desire, Killer’s Kiss, The Killing, and Paths of Glory. It was truly enlightening to see them in order from the silliness that is Fear and Desire to the masterpiece that is Paths of Glory. You can see in the progression of those four films Kubrick really finding himself; each film is more tightly controlled, more precise. Listening to Ronson talk about the boxes, in concert with the exhibit and the screenings has made me see Kubrick in a whole new light. What an inspiration.
Next weekend: Spartacus and Lolita.

Its so funny you post this. I’m listening to Jon Ronson’s Lost at Sea these days, and I fell asleep with it on last night, only to become vaguely aware of Ronson repeatedly saying the name Stanley Kubrick over and over again. This, directly after two hours of the Kubrick exhibit followed immediately by a double bill of The Killing and Paths of Glory. I woke up this morning trying to decide if it was a dream, or if Ronson has a chapter later on that involves Kubrick. I’m now guessing that its the second, but wouldn’t it be just mind-bendingly amazing if I listen to the rest of the book and Ronson doesn’t mention Kubrick once?
Looked at the trailer for Boxes. I’d buy it today if I could find it.

Window into reality? What? Huh? You have a fever or something? I was simply mentioning an ironic mismatch of photo and article.
[Bill Davis] “If you want to make points about FCP-X, you’d be well served to base them on actual facts rather then leaping to conclusions as you did in this case. Simple as that.
“Make points? Leaping to conclusions? Why don’t you reprocess who exactly is leaping to conclusions here, Bill. Or for that matter, trying to make points. It might astound you.

Take just a second to LOOK at the photo. Yep, real editors, when the photog show up are ALWAYS working at a desk without a single scrap of paper, pencil, stain, or coffee cup, and with every cable perfectly dressed. Right?
