When I used to go from a dv project to compressor, encode times were not long. But now, I’m taking hdv footage, captured & edited ProRes 8-bit and then to sdDVD. I suspect that has at least something to do with the increased compression times.

With only compressor open, the activity monitor says CPU usage ranges from 65-77%. I did a test on a 2 min. QT and now the encode time didn’t seem too bad. Using 2pass and best, 2 mins. took 20 mins., so that’s about 10 mins. for every one min.
My 19 min. project should take 3 hours, 16 mins. I can live with that.
I don’t know what must have been wrong on my previous projects that took days.

I’ve never used the Activity Monitor before. I guess I should have just compressor open, but then what are the specifics i should look for in the activity monitor?

I’ll try that. I think I’ve used “best” instead of better. do you lose much quality with better vs. best?

October 22, 2008 at 8:38 pm in reply to: Help.Need to make vhs from Apple ProRes 422 sequenceThanks, I had it set to 720 x 480. Why 486? The DV NTSC setting in fcp says 720 x 480.
If it’s not better quality I may not bother going from fcp to vhs this time, but if I get another rare request like this in the future, I guess I’ll just do whichever is easier depending on how much re-setting of cable might be necessary at the time to do a vhs. -

October 20, 2008 at 8:34 pm in reply to: Help.Need to make vhs from Apple ProRes 422 sequenceIt turns out it did not get the signal or something is wrong, just won’t print to video using that method. I also tried exporting as QT DV NTSC (self-contained), re-imported and put onto dv ntsc timeline….no luck it asks if i want it to change the clip to match the seq. No, gives black screen (accept for title) on TL, if I select yes it looks ok on canvas and pretends to print to video, but does not get the signal through. i’ve re-checked all my cables etc.
at least i have the dvd dub to tape, but would still like to solve this problem.

October 20, 2008 at 9:00 am in reply to: Help.Need to make vhs from Apple ProRes 422 sequenceYes, that gets the signal to the dsr-20 and from there i think i should be able to have it record to my vhs deck like i used to do in the dv days. (just need to crawl around under the desk and re-cable again.)
My guess is that this should give me a better quality than the dvd dub to vhs. I’ll find out when I try this. Thanks.

October 20, 2008 at 12:13 am in reply to: Help.Need to make vhs from Apple ProRes 422 sequenceNot too late to try that too..my client called and wanted to postpone our meeting until Tues.
But, I can’t do print to video from a ProRes 422, because you can’t go to tape with that via firewire, maybe not via anything farz I know.
Anyone know what and the best way to convert to a format best suited for this. New sequence settings, or Compressor?
I made a vhs from the DVD, but will also try something else if it’s better.

It’s ok, don’t feel guilty. For now I’ll use the hdv qt movie version of the sd dvd. But, I’d still like to solve this problem by doing some tests on short pieces.
mpeg-2 just seems like such a substandard format. i wish i knew if it was a limitation of hdv, compressor, my lack of expertise, or what.
For basics, I’d like to get a better understanding of such things as:
does export direct from fcp to compressor eliminate double compression on a rendered hdv seq., or is it beneficial to do same after dropping it into a pro res seq.?
besides direct from fcp, what are the other options for eliminating double compression, eg., choosing export using QT conversion and choosing some uncompressed settings vs. dropping the footage into a new seq. w. unc. settings.
or, (for minimal compression) after rough cuts only edit, drop hdv footage into prores seq., apply effects, export QT self contained, current settings to compressor.
Or something else?
