[mark suszko] “bad edits are blatant lessons in what not to do.”
Yup. Definitely learned more from crap than from gold.

[Jon Zanone] “I personnally am looking hard at the new Pannie P2/DV camera.”
So are we… although the P2 cards have to be plentiful (and thus an expensive initial purchase) to accomodate longer records – like interviews, etc.
However, they’re boasting significant upgrades in the next year-and-a-half.

No no no!
Go back to Stage Tool’s Moving Picture. Pan and Zoom / Pan and Scan stinks. It’s probably fine if true, unadulturated Avid EDLs are your passion, but for just getting it done, ST’s MP is much better!
‘ve been using it for years now and have had folks across the country do offlines of the moves on the free download of the software (with the red line through it) and email me the moves in a folder with the Avid Sequence Bin. It works beautifully in SD & in 1080iHD on my Adrenaline. The way Bill Ferster coded ther software, it follows the project’s size and resolution, so it would probably work in IMAX too. Only thing you have to do is make sure you check 16×9 mode vs 4×3 mode… it’s the only setting that doesn’t remember itself.
S’ not law. Just my 2

I never tried the software called “Automatic Duck”, but I hear it is supposed to tackle that.

[Jon Zanone] “Make sure to explain the MPEG GOP problem – if you get a tape hit on one I frame, it’s 15 frames later before you get a usable picture back.”
Hmmm… could you explain this further – or point me to a link?
I think it has something to do with how many keyframes are set per second of mpeg footage, but I’m not sure how that translates in actual editing language… Are you physically unable to edit single frames of video in an Avid? That can’t be right.

[Nina Staum] “2 questions for everyone:
1. What training did you receive when you first started editing?
2. How did you learn to make a good cut?”1.) None. They only taught 2 things back then – dirtecting and writing.
2.) Picked a bunch of my favorite movies and watched them with the sound off. Audio is the glue that links visual ideas together in the human mind, and turning off that link made it easier for me to pay attention to visual cues instead of getting caught-up in the dialogue.‘s funny… with the sound off, Nat Born Killers is actually a pretty bad movie. Another interesting result – with the audio off, the 1977 Star Wars still tells the story it needs to, however all three of the new ones really, REALLY fall short. Conclusion: effects ain’t nothing without top-notch sound design.

[Abehjha] “I don’t think my out of town clients would go for it though, way too many execs wanting to stick their heads in for screenings”
Too true.
I manage it my ditching the corporate work and sticking to the student and low-to-mid budget indie population. It reduces the number of hands in the cookie jar. Downside is having to hand-hold a lot. However, being selective has allowed every frame of video to be reel-worthy.______

NICE!
Plants are a great touch. Aaaah… and Mike Wazowski is front & center by the scopes too. Perfect!
I’ve found that the wireless mouse gets annoying for detailed work. Each time you move it, it has to ‘wake up’ over a 1/8″ space… really sucky for rotoscoping too. See whatcha think. Also, the wheeze of our Adrenaline HD box got traumatizing after about the 14-straight hour (and 12 Advil gelcaps) mark. We moved it behind a short sound wall for better audio mixing.
‘s funny… now that I’m in my new Outback, I don’t miss the clicks, querks and crunches of the ol’ F150… although I swore by them just a short year ago. Same difference, no?

Casique – definitely listen to Michael over me on this one – from what I’ve seen on this forum, he’s quite keen on the 24p world.
Michael and Oliver – thanks for your candor. 24p.com does offer up a huge amount of info on the matter, but written word can only go so far. Have you encountered any Avid certified courses, weekend bootcamps or even online courses on the 24p world? As Oliver pointed out, there’s a lot of contingencies with pulldown between Avid systems. Live, interactive instruction would be SO helpful.
