So I just wanted to be clear…
The Citidisk press release says it records the MXF via Firewire. Really? The full P2 MXF or the metadata less Firestore MXF?

I absouletly agree. and I don’t think its too late to communicate this info to Panasonic. They have 9 months to flip the switch and allow the HPC2000 to offer these functions. And you can bet that there will be more than a few posts on chat boards like this trying to hack the HPC2000 if it isn’t released with these functions. Then again… maybe we’re wrong and there really is something physical about the function and there isn’t a simple software/firmware answer to this holdout.

I tried to make these points in this post a week ago but was reprimanded…
I think after consideration the 24p look is for film out and for talking heads. My experience so far, and I’m hedging all this with an open ended question, is that 24p for video is more hype than real magnificent benefit. I just see so much jutter in the movement that I am completely fixated on the effect not the content. I’d like to be introduced to some well done 24p for video that people think are great examples of why this is a look that someone should integrate into one

March 30, 2006 at 7:40 pm in reply to: Downconverting Variable Speed 720p24N footage to SDIsn’t there some way of doing this in the camera? or is it only to the DV tape drive? That wouldn’t be very helpful… but can you out put the down convert through the firewire to a DV50 deck?

March 24, 2006 at 12:36 am in reply to: New P2 card sizes and transfer speed questions…Oh yes I was aware that they aren’t the propriatory Panasonic brand of P2, but I guess the Samsung announcement that 32gig was available wehn Panasonic is still working on releasing 16 made me wonder what the release schedule was going to be for Panasonic and in turn is Panasonic partnered with a single company to produce the P2 cards or are they totally manufacturing them on their own? As well as all the other questions in my first post…

Jan,
I’m only beating the dying horse here because you below comment left the door open a bit. If only for feed back…
“At this time the camera is switchable between 1080i and 720P, 60i/60P. It does not look like there is 24P or variable frame rates on its product plan at this time.”
I would be absolutely happy with this camera (on paper) if it shot 30p. It creates a look many video only clients are inteeseted in that don’t need or want the 24p effect.
It’s a bit of a buz kill holding these out. Especially since its 1/3″ HVX younger brother can do them and do some specialized variable frame rates as well.
Its already a risk for an independent to move into P2 and to not give us the standard features set we’re used to and have created business around… The whole thing becomes that much harder to try to buy into.

Well my first most fundamental question is will the HPC2000 offer 30p or 24p for all the SD and HD formats?
If yes then I’m a huge fan and will buy one as soon as it

So if I give up 24p/30p, tape-based workflows; invest in 16-32gig P2 (or 3rd party hard drives) come November06-January-07 and make the move to P2 and MXF… THEN I can have a camera come November06-January07 that can shoot 4:3/16:9, SD/HD, 480i/720p/1080i on P2.
Let’s think about this…
So for those willing to say goodbye to tape and for those ready to invest in a camera that allows them to HD as well as SD, then the HPC2000, given that P2 is adopted and becomes popular will have a camera that will spell the end of the SPX900 and will for one year, until the P2 Varicam comes out, be THE latest and greatest camera…
If I buy SDX900 now I start losing jobs in a year from now because of the growing HD market. If I buy the HPC2000 a year from now, I start losing money a year from then because the P2 Varicam comes out in 07…
Seriously, if the HPC had 24p and 30p but didn’t have a single other Under/Overcrank frame rate, then I could work the HPC2000 for at least 5 years before I start losing money to the next camera.
Personally, I can’t make enough money in one year to pay off a new camera every year. I as an independent owner operator I need at least two years to break even on a purchase that includes HD lens, sticks, monitor, bats, Camera and potentially reusable media.
Just Saturday I decided, with the help of a financial consultant, to not buy the SPX900 only to buy the HPC2000 with a full support package including P2 media in Nov06-Jan07. If I could work a three year lease with a $1 buyout I can make money off the camera (given my market) in two years. Maybe some can do faster maybe some slower

This would be so disappointing if the HPC2000 does not offer the 30p and 24p frame rates in 480, 720, and 1080.
Actually its a slam dunk purchase for me if it does.
Yet the HVX200 does these seetings so why other than making two different products would Panasonic not give the HPC200 at least 24p and 30p. I could even live without the very attractive over/undercrank options but these standard 24p and 30p are a must.
The HPC should be the HVX200 bigger brother and the only feature I would forgive Panasonic holding back on is the over undercrank… but believe me I’d want that too.
Patience is again the name of the game for me at this point but I think I’ve just decided to not buy the SDX900 because I want to waitfor the HPC2000. When do we get the full specs? NAB?
