Get the best video card first off. If you have $$ left in budget get a faster processor. Get the least amount of RAM, and then buy as much as you can from Crucial or OWC for much less than Apple charges, but do add RAM. (buy with 8MB, remove it, get 32MB from another vendor, and then send ’em the original RAM for a rebate. You’ll still save money relative to getting 32MD from Apple. FCP 7, X, and for that matter Premiere and MC will run just fine.
Also, If you can Find a refurbished iMac with the specs you want on Apple’s site (same warranty as new, I always get Apple refurbs when I can) you’ll save a bit more $$

With a few, vocal exceptions, most FCP X-enthusiasts are probably just teasing if they say that. And those that really believe it are… unhelpful IMO.

I think most people who actually use more than one NLE for real work would agree with you. I do. Though I still maintain that tracks suck when editing. 😉 I’ll concede that they have their uses when mixing. Though a Roles revamp could change my mind. 🙂

At about the same time, I was programming (editing) video wall presentations for concerts/trade shows etc. All the sources were on Laserdisc. Wish we’d had the fancy UI that David did, all TC number punching for me. 😉

Don’t do it… There are much more creative uses of Secondary Storylines that get you what you got with tracks and a lot more. Here’s one such trick i posted a while ago… 🙂 Skip to about 1:37 if it hasn’t done it for you…

Not the usual african safari, wildlife stuff either…the north and west of Uganda has some…errr interesting photo opportunities, if you can shoot without being seen, well you had to shoot without being seen or you would likely be …shot yourself..but not with a camera

Well then you do have an idea of video editing. No matter what you cut or how good it is, you always find flaws with it. 🙂

[Neil Paisnel] “My understanding is that you can Learn’ a section for the template, I guess with the R mark drag tool, or playing with the playhead. so I’d hope I could work out how to do it.”
That seems correct, though sounds like it’s either broken or maybe never worked… No help, but maybe send feedback…

[Neil Paisnel] “It confirms that how I thought it should work, is what I was trying…it is just that it does not do it.
“Without opening the HUD, when you click Match Audio from the enhancement menu and then choose the channel you want to match it to, does it do anything? Are you applying the filter to a specific channel by expanding the components? Maybe in X, the analyses happens when you click the sources in the timeline, and maybe the HUD just lets you fine tune it? I’ve honestly never used the Learn/Apply buttons in the FCP X version…
