Something we always did when I was first learning camera in the 60’s. Was to hand items from ceiling, or whatever you can hang it from and swing it and follow back and forth from every angle needing to follow focus, and maybe zoom, we also trucked between items holding a shot, but no one seems to truck or dolly anymore.

Ya know, I keep hearing this. Tried it myself. Problem is, I rock while editing. Ya can’t rock when you are standing. Rocking relaxes me and helps my juices flow. So I will remain seated as long as I have a chair that rocks.

I personally prefer Canare Cables. The LV-77S is the equivalent of Belden’s 8281. The LV-77s is much more flexible than 8281, and will drop only about 10 DB over 1000 feet. Not sure what your needs are at that disance but you should be able to run thru a proc amp and recoup that 10 DB loss if needed. 1000 feet is a log run for any standard analog video. Fibre would be nice but costly.

I probaly should state,I always tried to dress for comfort. Shorts, T-shirt, or some sort of knit shirt, Tennis shoes. I have always made every attempt to be neat, I do feel you should look nice albeit comfortable. As to Pixels coments, for awards shows I have usually dressed western, with my python boots, Levi dress slacks, and my Bugs Bunny Wrangler western shirt with Western Jacket. If I absolutely had to I would rent a Tux, but make every attempt to stay away from that.
I really believe that clients don’t come to a production/post production facility, because a person looks successful, or looks creative, ya just gotta be you.

Not knowing the market, makes it hard for me but I feel $100 an hour might be underpriced Figure how much you need for overhead, equipment, rent, utilities, etc for the business. My last job was at $350 an hour plus markups for tape, all out of pocket expenses, etc, for a linear suite. Oh, that was 9 years ago. I understand things are different for on-linear. Equipment costs much less. Don’t forget adding a fee for the announcer. Oh, music, we charged $75 needle drop for 30 or less, and $150 for over 30.
I’m sure I am forgeting something, but what the hey. Ya gotta start somewhere.
Oh, in answer to what does a 30 second spot cost? I always answered with what size is a grey suit?

Exactly why I have said so many times when someone can’t make it into the real world they go back to a University and teach.
I have always had the highest prices in town. I have always worn jeans or shorts, simple t-shirts, tennis shoes, something comfortable. You can’t be totally creative if you are uncomfortable in a suit. I have never ever flaunted my prices as the highest to a client. I have never told a client this is what I am worth. I let them judge for themself from my work. I have always been very modest. Those who portray themselves as being better than thou usually end up running their clients off.
Sell yourself as you are, others will read who you really are soon enough anyhow. No one likes a flake, showoff, or ego bigger than ability.
