    You probably want to use either MPEG-1 at 352×240 or 352×480 progressive, or Windows Media 9 at 640×480. In both cases you could encode to a max of 2.5mbps and fit all of the video on the CD with the video still looking good and playing back in Powerpoint.

    Increase the resolution? Not much can be done unfortunately. One thing would be to output to tape and then output from there to SDI into an expensive scaling box and then recapture. But even most of those boxes don’t do a much better job than software. One thing you could try is to deinterlace the content when encoding. For computer display, a deinterlaced (progressive) source looks much better for playback, although deinterlacing technically forces you to lose resolution. About the only other thing I can think of would be to encode to MPEG-2 interlaced at a very high bitrate that your computer can still playback, and then play the file in a player (like VLC) that can blend the two fields and scale to fullscreen. I seriously doubt that is possible for your situation though.

    Best bet would be to build the Kiosk interface at 640×480 or 800×600, and set the display to the same resolution and then play the video back at its natural size.

    I take it this isn’t for DVD, and more likely for sending to a broadcaster. The specs given to you are more than manageble and within reason. The max bitrate of MPEG-2 really isn’t limited as you suspect, but it seems to max out at around 160mbps for 1080p23.98. Of course, that bitrate is only for archival purposes, and there are quite a few houses that I know who encode SD for archive at 40-60mbps as well.

    As far as a safe peak bitrate if you are encoding for DVD, I would say no more than 8.5mbps. I have seen some players that can handle up to 18mbps on the peak though. For broadcast, just encode at the max available specs you can, as it will be re-encoded once it is muxed into a transport stream and the bitrate is made significantly lower.

    For encoding to really high bitrates and having total control over the encode, I would suggest the MainConcept Encoder. There are PC and Mac versions available.

    Squeeze is the way to go on this, and if you can’t find it locally, then you should be able to use the web to purchase and download it. Also, if Flash encoding is all you require, then there is Sorenson Squeeze for Flash which only offers Flash video encoding but is cheaper than the full encoding suite. Also, other options are Compression Master 3 from Popwire and Macromedia Flash Pro.

    If you wanted to best retain interlacing, then MJPEGa or b would have been a better choice than Photo-JPEG. For 300MB and 6 minutes, your bitrate could be around 6500kbps, more than adequate to maintain high quality and efficiency at SD for almost any codec that supports proper interlacing. An all i-frame MPEG-2 encode, or MPEG-4 or even Apple’s Intermediate Codec (although AIC for movement between systems can be unadvised) are possible solutions. I probably wouldn’t encode content for to an interlaced output using Windows Media.

    You are talking about the free Windows Media Encoder for Windows 2000 and XP right? Are you using some kind of special plugin to use Quicktime movies with it? By default, WME only supports .asf, .avi, .mpg, and .wmv’s as source video formats. I’d really like to learn your method for getting .mov’s to work with Windows Media Encoder.

    Windows Media Encoder will not accept QuickTime as an input format. You need to export an AVI. Its one of the major hinderences in using WME. So even if you got WME to recognize the full movie, it still wouldn’t be able to parse it and encode from it.

    Yes, it appears there is a bug with custom output sizes for Real Media. If you use one of the preset output sizes in the Size tab to encode to, it should work fine. But using a custom 16:9 or 4:3 size that isn’t in the list will cause a failure to encode.

    What you need to do is demux the VOB and then take the AC3 or MP2 audio and convert that to a WAV file. There are tons of apps that can do this stuff. Try videohelp.com for more info.

    I think Compressor 2 does a pretty decent job with MPEG-2, especially compared to the last version. But, if you need more control over the bitrate, you may want to look in to either the MainConcept encoder or Digigami MegePEG.X. If the source image is the problem and needs to be heavily filtered and preprocessed, then I would look at Popwire Compression Master.
