Yep, that was what I was going to suggest. I believe only the Animation codec supports Alpha channels from FCP or QT. I know DV certainly doesn’t.

Its possible, but I don’t see how you are any better off than just encoding to 720×480 or 640×480 and then playing the movie full screen or blown up 2x on playback. If you really want to encode your 720×480 source to 1280×1024, you just need an encoder that will allow you to encode to multiple custom resolutions, like Episode (Compression Master) or MainConcept.

Yes. Check out MPEG StreamClip. Its free and can demultiplex MPEG streams.

October 9, 2006 at 7:29 pm in reply to: Squeeze produces V DARK wmv’s and realmedia?

Squeeze just uses the same libraries for Real and WM encoding as the ones provided by Real and MS themselves, so there really should be no difference in what you can generate as compared to other encoding apps that do the same (like Canopus and Adobe). But, there may be a problem in the way Squeeze is handling the source color transition to the 4:2:0 color space of those codecs. Is there any way you can generate a YUY2, UYVY, or YV12 .AVI?

Its been a while since I used AE for preprocessing. I believe you need to use one the filters, but I can not remember which. Maybe someone with more experience can better answer this. I generally apply the deinterlace within the compression app like Episode or ProCoder.

Was there a QT 6.5.3? I only remember it going up to 6.5.2. No matter though, what I was really asking for is the codec that you used to export out of FCP. If you open the movie in QT and view the movie’s info, you should be able to find out what codec you are using. Also, it really isn’t a good idea to have both QT 7 and QT 6 on the same system OS. I imagine that many issues can occur because of that.

Of those options, After Effects is definitely the way to go. You likely want to use an adaptive deinterlacer, and while QT 7’s deinterlace filter is improved over previous versions, AE is still the better option.

I really like the quality and actually prefer it to Cinema Craft. Though I should state that I have never been that fond of using Cinema Craft and much prefer to use ProCoder for encoding MPEG-2 on a PC.

I assume you know what you are doing, but just for dexterity’s stake, what format of QT are you exporting out of FCP?

MainConcept has more options than Cinema Craft and is similar in speed.
