Hi there,
I see this thread is a couple of years old, but it’s related to my question.I’m just getting acquainted with Avid MC6 and have found a couple different ways to bring in DSLR footage.
1) Link AMA files to the footage on my hard drive, then transcode them using DNxHD 145 (seemingly recommended method).
2) Encode files using Adobe Encoder and selecting mxf (XDCAM 50), then link these using AMA link to files. Both work. I found using Adobe Encoder about 25% faster than transcoding (for small files anyway), but I did notice that the image was richer using the transcoding method, despite the fact that both version have the same colour space (YCbCr 709).
Is there a reason for this and is the transcoding method (though a bit longer) better quaility and better for post colour correcting)?
Thanks,Chad Gottfried

I have to say, I’m very disappointed with Beachtek, at least with my T3i. At first I (mistakenly) ordered a passive model, which was advertised as ideal for camcorders. Didn’t mention anything about DSLR cameras. There was an unacceptable hiss. I spoke to the owner of Beachtek and suggested I get the DXA-SLR model (powered). I did so and it did not solve anything. I still get a constant hiss no matter what gain setting (camera or adapter) I use. It seemed to work fine with a Canon 7D though.
Anyone else have audio issues with the T3i and Beachtek (or other XLR adapters)?
I wound up getting a Zoom H4N.

Thanks Bill and Richard for your relies.
Richard, I tried your method and it seemed to work, I tried in on my MC trial version at home with a 2 track clip and tried reducing it to 1. MC crashed a couple of times, but that may be an unrelated thing. (?)My question is, will I need to go through that process every time I insert the XDCam card, or is there a way to create a default setting? I’m guessing not. I’m still not sure why there are 8 channels when it seems the camera only has 4.
Cheers,

Yes, I have the T3i and I have the same problem. At first, I thought it was the Beachtek I was using since it didn’t seem to matter what mic I had plugged into it. With there was no external mic, the hiss was not really there. I discovered that if I left the cable plugged into the camera, but disconnected the other end from the adapter, the hiss was still there.
The problem is with the camera external mic input. The hiss was noticable in manual at a camera input setting level of 6.25% max.
The only solution is to use an external recorder and forget the external inputs on the camera.
Very disappointed with Canon!

Thanks Neil, good to know about the bin transfers. I hope I can track down all the projects that were used. Still a nightmare, but I least I know I will eventually wake up.

Thanks for your comments Phil. I went through all the drives and saw that the amount of the media is too much to put on a single drive. Can I “import” the footage into my project while leaving them in their respective drives (and scratch folders)? In other words, if I do select import, do the files remain where they are but are just added to the bins with the source path. My apologies, if this sounds too elementary, but this is the first I’ve come across this situation.
Thanks again for your help.
