It was a mix. Some were shot on Canon (including the same HV40) and others on Sony. Same results, no noticeable difference between the two.

I’ve not run a cleaning tape through it since it is brand new. I’ll give it a try.
Right now I’m using Maxell tapes. I also use Sony.
