Right now I only work in PAL SD.
I have a PC with Premiere 6.5 + TARGA 3000 + Win2K.
A betacam J-30 connected to this system.

A laptop (P4 3.2GHZ) with Premiere CS3.

I capture from the Z1 (via FW) on PP CS3 to an external USB drive (yes USB).
I do almost all the the editing CS3. Some compositing on C4 on the T3K PC- because of the video output.

Sometimes I re-capture HDV in HD mode and use the 1440×1080 size to do some zooms and similar stuff.

I will keep this way of work.
Capture from the Z1 camera (maybe with CineForm) on a FireWire port in DV or HDv.
Capture some material that still comes in Beta tapes (each day less…)
Edit inside PP CS4 and compositing on Combustion.

I NEED to have a good video out. Almost 90% of my films have ColorCorrection. So I need proper video out and monitor
I know that each day I will use less the Betacam SD tapes.

For monitoring I will keep my Sony PVM-20L4 monitor for SD PAL, and will get a good consumer LCD TV with HDMI input for HD preview.

I know that with a nice laptop with a FW port and a «n HDMI port I can do 90% of my work, but I want to have also SDI or at least YUV HD out.
I also plan to get a BlackMagic UltraScope.

With the T3K I have REAL TIME editing in SD YUV 422 (4 layers)
The system gets a bit slower with a couple of DV layers.
Quite unstable with MPEG-I frame.
This is the reason for the CineForm codec in my mind.

I wnat to work in HD (1920×1080) with 3 or 4 layers in RT.
The option for 2K can be nice in the future, but I feel that if I upgrade one day, I will go from HD to 4K skiping the 2K. But that day is quite far !

To work with the best laptop of the world and an external box like Matrox MXO2 is not very welcome for me and also for my clients.

What advices can you give me?
– best board for me
– best GPU (do I really need a Quadro FX)
– Core i7 or Dual Xeon
– is Cineform a good option
– …
– …
– …

For a while I was thinking on a Matrox solution but I have the feeling that is not my best solution now. For some reason, seems to me that MATROX is a bit “old” solution.

I know that Blackmagic or AJA are not accelerate boards.
-With the latest Core i7 or Xeon’s do we REALYY need that?
On top, with a Cineform, does it make sense to go to a Matrox?

The MATROX Premiere effects in real time, I’m sure I will not use them.

I edit with Cut, Mix and sometines some Left to Right Wipe.
All “effects” are done on Combustion.

I need a system to work with Premiere Pro CS4 (and future) that can play, WITHOUT render, 3 or 4 layers of video and a couple of graphics on top (names and lower thirds).

In my recent experience with Premiere CS3 on a laptop, I’ve edited 3 major projects:
-a 17 min training video
-a 7 min real state video
-a “large” 6H60m multicam video (3 cameras) on YOGA WORLD DAY 2009.

All the images on a External disc connected by USB 2.0.
Not a single problem.

But on the 3 cam, because one cam shooted all and the other two just recorded from time to time, without any sync option,
I’ve edited with cam1 on layer1
and cam 2 and cam3 on layers 2 and 3
____(Sync by eye, if you understand…)
Cam2 and Cam3 have been reduced like a PIP effect.

With the 3 layers (one full screen and 2 size effects) a proper PLAY was impossible.

That NEVER happend on the TARGA.

-If I buy a Decklink or a Xena and Premiere CS4, will I get a normal PLAY in this situation?
-Do I need Cineform for this ?

You say you work with AJA.
-On a Xena, the HDMI output is 1920×1080 or 1920×1200 ?
If it’s 1920×1200 I have to connect it to a PC monitor.
I DON’T wnat that option.
I would like to have a 1920×1080 to connect to a regular consumer LCD.

Considering my type of work, what solution do you advise me.
