    If you know your way around a 3D app, you would certainly have more options than in AE, but depending on your situation that may not be the most practical route.

    When building a cube in AE, be sure to have your layer boundaries overlap by 1 pixel to get a clean edge. To get motion blur to work, I’ve had my best results by turning off motion blur for the comp and using an adjustment layer with CC force Motion blur instead.

    I have a couple ideas – but before I try it, could you tell me the expected orientation and FOV of the screens? Is it 5 horizontal 4×3’s, Vertical 3:4’s or something else?

    At that point, it’s really a shot by shot case. But some of your options include tracking it and painting it out with a clean frame, or tracking it and covering it with an additional element (like adding another tree to the scene).

    Sounds like you have something fun in the works.

    Bill, you may want to try masking out your markers instead of keying them. This sounds like the kind of shot where you’ll want to to more than a one-click key, but instead use a couple mattes to control what’s going on – i.e. garbage matte, core matte, and edge matte.

    So, key the characters & mask the markers – That’s my recommendation.

    I’m willing to bet the white box is a null that is rendering with its viability turned on.

    Nulls are 100 x 100 white solids that do not render by default, but they WILL render if you drag them out of your solids folder and bring them back into another comp.

    Have you checked out the tutorials on https://www.curiousturtle.com/ ?

    I’ve got a couple tutorials on Mocha coming out in a few weeks, but I’m guessing that’s not fast enough for your current situation.

    Can you give any details about the types of shots you’re trying to approach?

    Jonas –

    Try making one “clean” frame in photoshop and tracking it back into your scene instead of trying to paint it out frame by frame or by using a plugin. Maltaannon did a nice tutorial on this topic a while back.

    Additionally, You may find the first half of my “analyzing motion” tutorial helpful where I explain how to track a still image into a moving background plate.

    Finally, you might also want to check out Steve Wright’s article, Invisible Effects, in the creative cow library.

    Almost anything is possible in AE.

    Here are a couple workflow tips that might help you out in this particular situation:

    1: Make sure your road image isn’t some enormous resolution if it doesn’t have to be. If the layer is being scaled down significantly or far enough away from the camera, you can aggressively downres your project without any visual loss. This is typically the biggest culprit for the buffer error.

    2. Use the purge options. If it only happens occasionally, use the edit>purge all command to make sure AE is only minding the frames that are currently of interest to you. And If it happens all the time, you may need to render using the “secret” option in the preferences panel.
    (you can access them by holding down the shift key when opening the preferences panel. The secret category appears at the bottom of the list. turn on purge every frame or purge every “n” frames to suit your needs.)

    3. If all else fails, render your project as an image sequence. Thay way when the render fails, you can pick up where you left off.
