  • Yea just wasn’t sure if there was a recommended 3.1 external HD. So many out there.

    Ahh alright gotcha.

  • Thanks for the help – that is a little over my head, but I will read up on it. None of this is straight forward haha

Sorry – what do you mean by cheap platter?

Thing is I hear that color correction shouldn’t be done on the proxy files so I would almost rather work with full transcoded Cineform files rather than proxies.

At this point my thought is to add a 1TB 860 EVO SSD and a 6TB Seagate Barracuda HD. Later I will add a 1TB 960 EVO M.2.

  • So I transcoded about 300 clips from my Maui trip to Cineform YUV 10 bit. 690GB! Holy cow…how are people handling that much data? This has become pretty overwhelming. Just not sure how to handle data sizes that big.

So my last trip to Maui I transcoded to Cineform YUV 10 bit…a little over 300+ clips. It was 687GB! Holy cow…I’m either going to have to not take so much footage or upgrade my storage big time.

Yea I am definitely going to start transcoding to Cineform on the front end.

Why 1TB though? It is just used for CURRENT Project & Source Media, Cache, and Scratch. When the project is done I will through it on a normal HD. Wouldn’t 500GB be more than enough?

I’m all about saving money, so if you think the 860 is the better way to go then by all means I can go that route.

I could even do a setup like this:

    1. Samsung 850 EVO 250GB: OS and Applications
    2. Samsung 860 or 960 M.2 500GB ($170 for 860 or $230 for 960): Project & Source Media
    3. Samsung 860 EVO SSD 500GB ($150): Media Cache & Scratch
    4. WD Blue 1TB HDD: For general storage and archived media projects

  • Couldn’t you just render out a DNxHD file at the end though? You don’t use all the footage you shoot, so why not just make proxies on the front end and then render out a master DNxHD file at the end?

I see what your saying though. It probably is not much more work to just trasncode to Cineform or DNxHD at the front end even if you don’t use all the footage. Probably what I will do from now on.

Alright guys. So I think I am going to do the following:

    1. Leave my current Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD for OS and Software
    2. Buy an M.2 SSD like the Samsung 960 EVO 500GB for Project & Source Media, Cache, and Scratch
    3. Leave my current WD Blue 1TB HDD for general storage – all archived Premiere Pro projects will go on this for now. I can upgrade to more storage space later.

I know it is deal to have 3 SSDs, but I can’t swing that right now.

Does this sound like a decent plan?

    Thanks.
