I’ve heard great things about the BT series but I’m not sure where this new model fits in.
It’s 21″ and listed for $2000NZ cheaper than the 17″ 1710 so it’s obviously compromised – definitely on inputs but where else!
As you say, might be best to stick with the one I know is good, but lots more $.

As Steve says, the HDSLRs are so popular because they’re capable of shots not normally anywhere near your price range. That’s why people are happy (ish) to accept and work around the limitations with the format.
The GH2 is also a very underrated camera and deserves consideration.

Just be aware that it isn’t the tool for all applications but what it can do for the price is awesome.

Video wise, I’ve been using one on the odd occasion over the last year and it’s certainly a great tool for certain situations. I wouldn’t rely on it as my only option however, as you’re no doubt aware,there are a lot of hurdles with audio, rolling shutter, clip length restrictions, overheating, not to mention stabilising the thing. So yeah, either pick your battles or spend a lot making it behave more like a video camera.

I much prefer the look from my mates 5Dm2 with it’s full size sensor but if it’s not an economical investment wise (like it wasn’t for me) the lower cost alternatives aren’t bad and any lens you buy will work better should you upgrade to the 5d spec down the track.

Photo wise, 5D no contest! Both take acceptable pics but the 5D is just another level again.

Thanks for the help guys. Third cable in and it works!
I ended up getting a pretty expensive one with Zacuto written on the bag, being 99% percent sure that only the bag would be actually branded zacuto, but hoping they would have chosen it at least with this purpose in mind. And wow, a 8.9″ screen is certainly a little easier for focus with shallow dop.

Right, well if it’s not some dodgy setting somewhere then I’ll play the process of elimination game.
The monitor is definitely ok as I can hook my bluray player up to it. So it’s either the cable or cam as I get the same issue when plugged in my tv at home.
Unfortunately don’t have any other mini hdmi devices so will go and annoy someone who does.
Hopefully it’s the cord, I doubt the camera will be under warranty.

Thanks everyone who took the time to post. Certainly lots to think about.
I’m at the point now where I might just make a leap of faith and buy MC at it’s $995 special.
Presuming I can, I’ll just ignore the hardware I/O side of things for now and do the inc training and learn on some less important projects, and make the switch next year and see where the hardware is at then.

Thanks for the reply. I will download the trial but unfortunately my 80 hour weeks will probably limit my ability to really get my head around it before the 60% switch offer expires.

Yes, price was the reason I went with FCP all those years ago but to its credit, it’s certainly done the job I needed it to do. Until now.

I’ve read internet whispers that Avid may support other Matrox I/O in the near future. Does anyone know anything about this or are they just rumours?
