    I’ve done a SD downconvert which just so happens to be the same way Larry recommended. I’d say “great minds think alike” but would be a horrible insult to Larry!
    And I’ve used the settings outlined in this tutorial to create the DVD files:

    Certainly the frame settings have made an improvement and I can probably live with it now. I would try BitVice but it seems like a $200US gamble.
    There are still noticeable compression blocks around text but I am watching it on a big HD LCD so the SD quality has to show up somewhere I guess!

    Thanks a lot for your help.
    That’s great clarification on the interlacing issue. I suspected that was the case but didn’t want to assume anything.

    In regards to compressor, I’ve got motion estimation to best and 2 pass variable bit rate with the target well above the defaults. I’m getting a lot of compression noise around detail and from what I’ve read it has a lot to do with the HD to SD downsizing. So I guess I need to either convert the footage to SD first, or use something like bitvice which apparently has a high quality downconvert in the encode process.

  • Sorry, I’ve confused everyone by bringing in the 720p option!

    I was only using that as an example as I was working on that project and it was having the same issues.
    I’ll try and explain myself better…

    The problem is the same if:

    – I’m working in Pro Res LT 1080p in a Pro Res HDTV 1080 sequence (no field dominance) and outputting via the Matrox MX02LE on the Matrox 1080p 25 YUV 10bit setting.

    – I’m working in Pro Res LT 720p in a Pro Res HDTV 720p seq (no field dominance) and outputting via Matrox in either the Matrox 720p 50 YUV 10bit OR the Matrox 720p 25 YUV 10 bit setting. (error operator on the 25 fps option, didn’t see if right down the bottom of the list, not with the other 720p options! But same result)

    So yes, well aware that I’m down scaling to DVD and that was the whole point of the question really.
    It fixes the problem but why does it fix the problem? Does it actually create fields from the ‘full’ frames?
    I would think I should be able to monitor progressive footage with the gear I have without this crazy jitter effect. Maybe the 5 less frames we get with PAL just ‘does’ this??

    Thanks again for the help. As I mentioned it’s a bit of a dead issue in that the DVD is ok but it’s not exactly a pleasant exercise monitoring the edit on an external video monitor!

    I’ve transcoded the footage to FCP friendly Pro Res LT, I’m currently using a 720p project which has the same symptoms.
    Seq settings are HDTV 720p, no field dominance being progressive, and the match Pro Res Lt codec.
    Matrox settings are Matrox MX02 – 720p 50 YUV 8 bit.

    Is the 50 fps the problem here?? I don’t have a 25 fps option on the Matrox. (New Zealand so PAL, or what was PAL)

    No, it’s a entry level pro cam. I guess similar to an EX1 in its market.

    That’s great info and backs up my suspicion that it was the SPL issue.
    Didn’t realise the Que was so low in its limit.
    The link you posted was Db drag racing which is a bit different (where people jam as much stereo as they can into a car) but we’re talking still 100db to 150db range so that certainly explains the issue.
    I’ll see what I can find or hire.

  • Hi Dave.
    Yes, been a time consuming job to fix too. And I use the word “fix” very loosely!
    I think it’s partly clever marketing too on GoPro’s part. Lots of people think you can just stick them on anything and get a good result. I’ve personally got good results when used in ideal conditions but plenty of substandard stuff too when any shake enters the game.
