Ok, now for the serious answer.

What Matt was getting at is that the MXF “option” is the option to actually create the MXF clips in CatDV.

Calibrated just gives you the ability to see/play the raw media, but the CatDV MXF option actually stitches the video and audio together into a clip (metaclip) that you can play.

As you know P2 and XDCAM MXF are nice hodgepodges of audio and video. CatDV lets you make sense of them, but once they are gathered into a clip, you need Calibrated to allow your computer to play them back.

The web download demo doesn’t have the option to “gather” the elements into what we call a metaclip so you just get a big list of gibberish if you try to import.

When you have the MXF option enabled and you drag a CONTENTS folder into CatDV, you get a clear list of clips that you can play instead of the individual audio and video and xml files that I’ll bet you now see.

Matt is the answer, buzz him and get the full demo version.

    Steve,

P2 is no problem, but CatDV currently doesn’t support the blah, blah, blah files you mentioned.

    I think there’s a codec coming after NAB. 😉

Once Matt turns on the MXF, you’re golden.

April 5, 2011 at 8:24 am in reply to: Workernode won’t retain file creation dates

    Rolf,

Could you use DT1 as a variable to give him the original creation date as part of the name for the transcoded file?

I tried a quick test in Worker 3.1.0, but (DT1) and (MD2) both gave me the value for Source Date (SD2). I used the standard ${field ID} syntax.

Can you check that? If it works, he’d get a way to track his creation dates.

Tom, let me know if it’s a CatDV thing and I’ll try to pitch in too, but it seems more environmental than software/hardware.

  • I’ve been asked to integrate the 2 systems, but it looked cost prohibitive the deeper we got.

Shotgun runs in Postgres SQL and is mainly aimed at gfx and vfx shops, at least from what I’ve seen in town. It supports versioning and project management as far as “how many shots are done now” and “which version is the last one”. Good for the gfx folks but yes, limited as to what it can do with media management.

IMHO, scheduling and asset management are pretty different worlds and I believe you’d suffer on one of the other if you tried to do both. But I’ve not really dug into the automation and other media management features of Shotgun. (does it support file-based automations?)

I think Shotgun and Basecamp are a better comparison than Shotgun and CatDV, different animals. But I’d love to hear more from folks who may have checked it out further. Could you repost what you get over there, or at least link?

I think the key is the “had no problems” and now you do.

I find that media can cause all sorts of problems.

Try working with just one clip and see how it goes. You may have some issues with larger catalogs.

Also, depending on your versions of Java and Quicktime, you may see wide variances in how the app performs. I have dozens of folks here logging on various versions of Mac OSX without issue. We also have quite a few PC’s but I find that PC’s generally need their Quicktime versions checked to find one that is stable.

Remember, Apple is selling a lot of phones and that’s where their focus is on QT these days. That, coupled with adding Java in and it can make things a bit dicey, especially when you’re demo-ing and haven’t had anyone to help get your rig stabilized.

As you will read over and over on this board. CatDV is not really intended to be user installed, in my opinion. It’s part of a system that is normally integrated and managed by a tech, like any other piece of post production software.

If you let Matt know who your dealer is, I’m sure he can get you someone to help you out.

In the meantime, can any of you guys solidly running XP shoot us some known good versions of QT and JRE? I’m running mostly Win 7 these days.

I can’t speak to what’s possible in programming but have you looked at the feature we’re talking about?

Also, you might want to speak to your dealer and see if CatDV is actually the best solution for what you’re doing.

I know that might be heresy here but I always think that you should spend some time evaluating a system and if it doesn’t suit you, let it go.

But… have you had an in-depth session with a dealer so that they can show you what’s possible? Also, how many seats are you looking at purchasing, if it’s a large integration, you can consider purchasing some custom programming to get the features you need. One of my reality tv clients did this and were really pleased with the results.

I agree that for logging that’s a solid feature. Especially if you’re looking at stuff for the first time.

The methodology behind CatDV is a little different. You basically give up the “database-like” aspect of some logging systems for the power of the client app and the ability to tag multiple clips with the same metadata at once.

The feature Matt speaks of can take the metadata from one clip and paste it across a set. You can also select all the clips in a set, or the whole database for that matter and set a metadata field with one operation. So for instance if you determine that all the clips you’re looking at were shot at the same location, you can tag 1,2 or 200 with that value in one shot.

The time this saves is pretty huge.

March 28, 2011 at 6:55 pm in reply to: Path-based Preview Confusion in CatDV Pro

    Kevin,

I saw this last week on a gig. I had a PC path defined as “Z:” and when I created proxy on the Mac side I got “proxyZ” instead of my expected “proxy” as root.

    Weird one.

Interestingly, I say something like this this week.

I was able to clear the preview paths and then reenter them and it all went away.

One question, do you have any paths under “Original Full-Res Media”?
