Ah that’s right, it’s starting to come back to me now. So I go to FCP and then do File > Import > Cinema Tools telecine log? I remember it’s something like that, and then I capture the tapes that way in FCP with the log and capture but with the flex files? So you’re saying I should reverse telecine to 23.98, NOT 24 fps?
There is no post super so it’s on me to figure this out (I was planning on calling the two transfer houses and get their input once I’m given the green light to start capturing tapes). The other questions, I don’t have answers yet. I’m very confident in my storytelling and operating skills but it’s this critical setup process that assistants have been doing for me the past couple years that I need to make sure are done properly before I start this! The last thing I want to have happen is end up with a beautiful film and then not be able to actually go back to film…

So with PM you get faster rates out of non raided SATA drives?
Yesterday I bit the bullet and ordered the USB Ware 5 bay External SATA enclosure with PM. It’s scheduled to arrive today (their warehouse happens to be 40 miles away from me). Thanks guys!

Walter can’t you just pull the clips directly into your timeline? When I do that, I don’t have any render bars…

I don’t believe you need to use the XDCAM transfer software anymore. I’m about to start editing a season of a show for Sony Pictures shot on XDCAM and we just ran a cam test a few weeks ago. I could pull the clips generated from the camera directly into the timeline of FCP 6.0.4 with no issue. This is part of the 6.0.4 update… I hope someone else can back me up on this as I haven’t started the show officially yet but this was how our camera test went…

I love options and had seen that enclosure too. I love the price, I think that’s more in my league, glad to hear your good experience with it.

You just blew my mind. I pulled out drives that I used for previous films (1tb Seagates) and read the top of the label not even knowing these drives would ever have a jumper capable of limiting speed, and sure enough it was limited to 1.5! I’m not embarrassed of admitting stupidity and learning something new but that is pretty embarrassing!
Another follow up question since I have obvious holes in my knowledge: if I’m running internal computer power (split off my optical drive) to power my SATA enclosure with four drives with a fan (it’s designed to be an internal drive enclosure run off of internal power) and my enclosure doesn’t have a separate power plug input for each drive (it offers a place to plug in two SATA power cables or 2 normal 4 prong power plugs) – is plugging in two SATA power cables enough power (considering they’re all being split off the same optical power cable)? In other words, my setup is very close to the popular G5 Jive that Sonnet Tech used to offer but it has four drives and a fan. Will it be able to pull enough power for all this from two SATA power plugs or two standard four prong power plugs?

This was exactly what I suspected. I had been reading user reviews for certain eSATA to SATA cables on Newegg (I try to take these with a grain of salt since most people who leave comments on retail sites are not well informed) but one cable had many users saying they could only achieve USB transfer speeds because of the “conversion”. That threw a bit of doubt in my assumed knowledge and you just wiped my doubt away. Thank you sir.

The one I have takes internal power from my computer. I think that’s better regulated than a cheap external power supply since it’s coming from my machine – or that would be my thinking at least…
So, any issues using eSATA to SATA cables?

So, it’s absolutely fine to run 4, eSATA to SATA cables from my new Sonnet E4P card to an external SATA enclosure with four drive bays? There’s no downside to using eSATA to SATA cables? Thanks again.

Oddly enough it seems to have fixed itself after an update to FCP and Quicktime…
