Job – bah (slaps forehead) – I guess I fell into the stereotypical freakout and post before thinking category. Thanks so much for the information about the demo. I downloaded it as well as their test project and everything seems to run buttery smooth (I’m on Quicktime Pro 7.6.2). Is version 4 going to be a radically different interface or anything? I’ve done many searches on it and can’t seem to find any literature on the new version or a set release date but this post super has deep Avid ties and they generally know exactly what’s going on…

Nope, I only use the non HQ version or ProRes but I might have a feature coming up that’s shooting on the Red, no idea what our workflow will be though…

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I was trying out my Decklink HD Extreme and it was ok for my needs but does some weird stuff. It does actually give you an expanded desktop display when outside of FCP but when I run full screen videos on it outside of FCP, it has a little bit of stepping going on and the hertz were just a little too low for my plasma that anything other than video displayed had a slight strobe to it – I couldn’t adjust the hertz high enough. Also in FCP, since it only plays out broadcast standards, it was doing weird things motion wise and with occasional green speckles with a mixed timeline I ran it through that mixed ProRes 1080 24p with DVCPRO 1080 24p. I don’t plan on doing any color correction and apparently the hardware acceleration with the Decklink Extreme card is almost negligible since it’s just the scaling so for now I’m going to try out the TripleHead2Go from Matrox that Shane has been using (sell the Decklink Extreme card for $600), running my two 24 inch monitors off of it and then the second DVI port to my plasma. Then in the future if I need a capture card, I’ll prob go LHi but since 99% of the time as a film editor, the footage is already captured onto a hard drive for me or lately I’ve been dealing more and more with file based cameras and I just need the monitor for clients to view cuts and to get a bigger picture of my edits, I hope this will be the best solution…

So then RT performance though, while actually editing in FCP, there’s no difference. The Kona LHi will just cross convert much faster etc. when going to new codecs like XDCAM to ProRes or Red to ProRes but both should perform just as well editing in FCP with ProRes footage? Also, the card isn’t in bad shape, it’s not off Ebay. My director friend purchased it while I was with him back in winter 07′ when he wanted to capture tapes from his film shot on an F900 and he bought it new from Melrose Mac in Hollywood for $1050 or something like that and then captured all the tapes for the film and that is all that it was used for. He’s been using his 2 macbook pros since then.
And my question about the memory wasn’t what KIND to buy, that’s pretty obvious. I thought there were tricks to get the best performance out of your mac, like multiples of 4 or something, or was it each platter needs to be divisible by 4. That’s what I was asking, my memory is coming from Crucial.com, I’ve had nothing but great experiences with them…

The difference you’re talking about is having a capture card (decklink extreme HD OR Kona LHi) vs NOT having any card? I would assume the performance is the same with both cards when dealing with ProRes footage as well since it’s the scaling that all these capture cards handle?

In your experience with Kona 3 cards (should be same hardware acceleration as LHi) how substantial is it? Does it make a big difference or is it just a little performance boost?

If you’re telling me the ONLY difference between the two in the categories of 1. RT performance and 2. sending a broadcast quality signal to a plasma is HDMI instead of component, then no, it’s definitely not worth $1000 extra just to get HDMI out.
But the wording on AJA’s brochure for the LHi is confusing then – “… developed in close cooperation with Apple and available exclusively on high-end KONA cards. KONA hardware takes a portion of the codec processing load off the CPU, allowing more RealTime effects in Final Cut Pro when outputting”. So this is the EXACT same thing the Decklink Extreme HD card does? Will they both perform the same when working with ProRes? Trust me, I’m not doubting you, just want to make sure I’m clear.

UPDATE: just found out that the mac I’d be getting is a WOODCREST 3.0 ghz quad or rather 2 dual core 3.0 ghz intel processors. Now this is getting interesting, would you still recommend this setup or is this now getting a little too slow and perhaps dated for an “upgrade”?
I checked out the LHi card and am pretty much sold on it. How much RT performance does your Kona add? If it’s substantial, then running an older woodcrest processor with an LHi card should still yield great RT performance?
I hear ya on storage. I have a Sonnet Tempo e4p card that I run to a PM external 5 drive SATA box that I’ve run in software raids but usually just do single drive mode – it’ll obviously make the move over to the new machine since my dual core g5 was PCIe thank god…
