I love Adobe After Effects. But like all video and graphics tools, the outcome is only as good as the user.

Here is a clip of a documentary created entirely in After Effects (I hired Rich Rubasch of Tilt Media). It “blows me away”…

I would do an all day documentary on their wedding (tag along the wedding parties from morning til night). Videotape family and friends interviews, the ceremony, the dance, incorporate photos, etc.

    Mike,

I understand what you’re saying. For your case/example of spending 4 hours on obtaining/hiring a certain subcontractor, I bill for my “project management time.” For every project, I estimate and invoice “Producer/Project Coordination” hours for such things (teleconferences, client meetings, subcontractor production meetings, me sitting in the hot seat during post, etc.) and keep a log in MS Excel.

Since I am getting paid for my all of my time in all cases, does it still make good business sense to additionally mark up the subcontracted services?

So, I think this is what I gather overall…the same “Golden Rule”…
    1. Find out the budget.
    2. Perform all services at the highest level of quality for the budget.
    3. Try to get as much of the budget as possible (with or without markups).

    Agree?

P.S. I write for video so grammar doesn’ count 🙂

    JP,

I have a few clients that require $1 million general liability policies in order to do business with them. No policy = no business. Period.

Yes, it does seem to make sense that your client (the Producer) should have his own policy to cover you and all his other subs. But from my

Thanks guys. I ended up going with Send2Fax. $7.95 per month with 100 pages per month. Good on-line reviews. Similar to Fax4Me. We’ll see how it works.

Maybe on-camera interviews with friends, caretakers and family members. You could use photos, scanned greeting cards, wedding certificate, etc. as cutaways/b-roll to cover the diced up the bites you use. Also, I find that a great soundtrack with several cuts adds a lot of emotion/impact.
