October 2, 2005 at 2:35 am in reply to: CSS Positioning…is this method good or bad? why? (Curtis?)Thanks for the reply. Now, If I do use this to center the page, what about if I want to position lets say some slices from photoshop using the ABSOLUTE property in that container.
ie.
I have 5 jpg files and one gif file (a logo), and I want to make 5 DIV’s that are absolutely positioned in the DIV that is centered on the page as in the example link I gave you. Everything I position inside the main DIV will be centered no matter what the browser size is. Is this a bad practice? I have been reading alot of negative things on using ABSOLUTE positioning in this way. If its a bad practice, I will stick with tables for the layout portion for now. I am in that “Wanting to position with CSS mood” but I dont want to sacrifice alot of other things while doing it. I like the sites on http://www.csszengarden.com and how they are designed and set up to float with the page, or expand on one side, but most of my designs are not like that. I like to “center” my content in whatever kind of frames I use at the moment. Its either going to be the old fashioned way (tables) or the new wave way (CSS-P)… I cant decide =)
Wow.. sorry for the ramble. lolo

May 4, 2005 at 1:15 pm in reply to: Photoshop CS2 Sluggish/lagging while working?Hello,
I did some sluething and figured out it was my mcaffee virus scan that would use the “MCshield.exe” process to jump my PC to 100% usage everytime I would try using a tool in CS2. I disabled it and Photoshop works fine. It was a wierd problem; I may have a bad install of Mcafee; or I need to get rid of it altogether. First time it messed with a program I use.

I’m on a cable modem with a 5 meg download. Your site did load completely in a few seconds, but I could see it loading all the slices you have on that one page… WOW.. it seems like alot. I can also see how people on slower connections will not bother with the site because of this, and they will most likely see the white spaces (which are the image slices not loading right away for the viewer) and leave.
Could you maybe combine some slices so there arent as many as you have on there?
If you want to see how long it will take to download the page, dreamweaver has an estimated download time on the bottom right of the page you are working on. It tells you the size of the page you are working on and also how long it will take to download on whatever speed you have it set at.

April 19, 2005 at 2:43 am in reply to: Curtis? your takes on the practices in here “The Zen of CSS Design : Visual Enlightenment for the Web”Hi Curtis,
Sorry about my slow response.. lol. There’s alot going on right now, new vegas upgrade, new photoshop cs2, adobe BUYING macromedia, and panasonic introducing there very large brother to the dvx100 camera; the hvx-200(wow… i want it).
anyway, to answer your question. I have been attempting to use div tags via dreamweaver for a few years now and I have created some dull sites with them, but I actually agree with you at this point that its much easier to design my site in photoshop, slice it, import it into dreamweaver and work from there with the tables. I like CSS-P and everything else to do with CSS, but I can’t seem to go 100% tableless right now. 😉

I Agree with everything curtis has said to help you. I especially agree with what he said about Jakob Nielsen and his books. I highly suggest these books to anyone who is interested in “usability” on the web:
Web Usability by Jakob Nielsen
Dont make me think! by Steve Krug
Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed by Jakob NielsenYou will learn a plethora of information after reading these books and it will only make your web design/development better. Trust me.

I’m not sure exactly what font that is, but I suggest you try this website to see what it might be related to:
https://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/
It will let you upload an image (even a rasterized one) and suggest fonts related to what it scans. I have used it a few times with OK results. Try it, you may find something you are looking for.

I have a dvx100 that i am willing to sell to upgrade to this camera, but if its around 10K and doesnt compete with the Z1 prices… I may be changing my mind. from around $4K to $10K is a significant jump in price point. I wonder exactly what audience Panasonic is aiming for with this camera? Most people with XL1s, dvx100’s, and the sonys of the same style most likely wont justify five extra grand for a new camera (even with those great features). My two cents..
