July 9, 2018 at 7:40 pm in reply to: Upgrading from twin HD displays. Anyone using curved ultra wide 21:9 monitor? The late 2016 MBPro 15”. Top Model with the 4gig GPU. Powerful enough laptop for the screens and processing, but I don’t care for the keyboard, the touch bar is kinda useless, and the TB3 ports are ridiculously loose. Especially on the right side. I don’t care for the sound of the trackpad either. I’m using a TB3 dock now (not in the pic) and TB3 to TB2 adapters and they constantly lose connection when the computer goes into sleep. Sometimes you have to reboot computer or any combination of drives and dock to get it all running normal again. Never had issues like that with my old 2012 iMac.

July 6, 2018 at 9:46 pm in reply to: Upgrading from twin HD displays. Anyone using curved ultra wide 21:9 monitor? My LG just looks big from the camera angle btw. Before I had the 27” iMac and a Dell 21.5” As my bin monitor. Both the dell and this LG have the idiotic downward ports as well. The LG has some nice sounding speakers in it. similar to an iMac.
38” would be nice as would retina. I’d keep to curved

July 6, 2018 at 5:30 pm in reply to: Upgrading from twin HD displays. Anyone using curved ultra wide 21:9 monitor?Looks pretty curved to me. It’s a 34” and yes it’s curved. The curve is easy to get used to. It’s so wide I figure anything helps. This model has TB2 pass through. So it goes to the screen, then the raid, then the BMD device.
Biggest downside vs two monitors is that the bin/browser can’t be full height when dealing with one screen. When I had two screens one was dedicated to the browser like in the pic where it’s on my laptop. i usually run with the laptop closed (or dedicated to YouTube TV).

It’s a great idea in theory, but you do not want to store any motion content in the library. Apple just hasn’t thought this one through yet, although the feature is nearly 2 years old.
You’ll end up with “copies” all over your system. As you open projects that have effects embedded, copy and paste things, and just generally work like normal, somehow they always seem to migrate BACK to your Motion templates folder. Where if you already have the effect, it creates a copy. And then it’ll happen again and again until you realize your motion templates folder is full of copies. And the problem then, is that any projects linked to the copy version(s) can only use those versions. So you have to keep them or risk having offline effects.
I was quite excited by the idea when it first came out and have been toying with it ever since as others have, but it just doesn’t pan out in daily practice.
Here’s the ONE way I do occasionally use it. At the end of a job, I usually consolidate a new library from the project(s) so that they contain only the used media. The original library will get trashed. But after I create the new library, and before I trash the old one, I consolidate the motion templates media into the old library. Then I open the old library package at the finder level to find the motion templates neatly organized into a folder structure like they are in the finder. I then simply copy that and archive it with the new library, Motion and Affinity stuff, scripts, etc. that I want to keep. Someday down the road when I revisit the project and I can’t figure out what plugins I used or what file path they resided in, this will be invaluable. Especially since FCPX still has no sort of relink for plugins or even a list of the missing plugins.

June 8, 2018 at 7:59 pm in reply to: Is there any easy way to get rid of a bra strap from this interview?I recently used SliceX object remover to remove an offending tuft of hair from an interview. Cloning a piece of the fairly uniform background to cover it. The built in mocha tracking did a great job, changing perspective, shape and scale with the movement of his head. But this looks a bit more complicated.

June 6, 2018 at 4:16 pm in reply to: Do I need to update software/hardware for downloading/editing smartphone videos?FCPX has the same barely updated DVD/Blu-Ray/AVCHD burning that FCP 7 had. Same simple backgrounds and minimal menuing with little control over the look. Good for client one offs. I believe chapters are used, but it’s been awhile.
The usual client format for me is an mp4. There are lots of built in settings in FCPX or you can use Compressor to roll your own settings which will be accessible from FCPX share menu.
You can buy a small portable usb powered Blu-ray burner for next to nothing. I have one gathering lots of dust somewhere.

I like keeping everything related to the job in one folder on an external raid 5. Nothing but apps on the internal. If you create the library on an external RAID, the rest of FCPX default settings are great. You won’t accidentally fill up your system drive with renders and if you copy your media into the library it’ll be on the same drive (I copy camera cards to the job folder before import). Your backups will automatically be on the internal by default, a different drive from the Library.
It works for me. Camera masters either always exist somewhere else. Usually on client’s drives or small USB 3 drives. And with the Library on a Raid 5 there’s that protection plus additional protection of it being on the system drive as a backup.
Once projects are finalized, I create a consolidated library that contains just the media used and additional assets required (like custom motion or AE work) and save it all to a mirrored raid. Every year I send one of the mirrored raid drives to a family member and the other to another family member after copying the data to two new drives that are bigger.

AE already has clones for the most part. They’re just precomps. There are some slight differences, but what do you use clones for mostly? To make duplicates of a group that are always the same as the group. Well, that’s what compositions ARE in AE. You want to clone a comp in AE, you just duplicate the comp. All duplicates link back to the same comp. Clones are a necessity in Motion because of Motion’s short falling that it doesn’t have multiple compositions.

I’m no expert on nodes, but that’s what I always wondered. Looks great for routing and connections due to is visual nature of showing flow. But it does seem to be pretty lacking in showing the temporal. Keyframes, stops and starts, etc. Maybe better for color correction and compositing but less so for motion graphics?
