If you really want to convert your fuzzy 4:3 video to 16:9, drop it in a 16:9 HD sequence and scale to taste. I don’t understand why you’d want to stretch it to fill the screen and distort the image, but in any case the transform controls are how you’d do it, yes.

I would probably just convert it to proper 4:3 and save the drive space. Modern TVs already have the fit to fill option if you really feel like stretching it.

  • After a little testing last night, I discovered that the hue/sat effect is still a motion template, but that your’re correct that it definitely uses different color science. But I think it’s just a different filter. You can copy and paste their filter in Motion and create your own hue/sat filter that will be exactly the same. You can even add it to your favorites too if you like the X version better. Seems to me that the X version of the filter was tweaked to stay within certain limits. Blacks won’t drop under 0 and the Luna is more limited than Motion’s filter. Motion’s filter quickly goes way out of broadcast safe limits.

  • One other note from your article. You may have realized it now, but you mentioned that to change the order of which published items appear in the inspector you have to unpublished and republish. Not true. Just drag them up or down in the project pane under published parameters. You can rename and drag items up and down in the list. This is essentially where you’re building the interface for X. If you’d rather a published parameter be at the top, just drag it up there.

  • Why not “duplicate and open in Motion”? If that functioned differently then you’d prove your case in a matter of seconds.

  • In your HUE example, did you create your filter from scratch in Motion, or did you duplicate the one in FCP X? Sounds like you were trying to recreate what they did from scratch.

The filters in X that aren’t native and can be opened in Motion obviously exist somewhere or they wouldn’t be able to magically create a duplicate Motion project from thin air.

You looking at the right scopes? There are scopes for both the event window and the viewer. Make sure you’ve got the viewer scopes open. (cmd+7)

  • Very few FCP X effects are native (quartz composer?) effects. Can almost always right click and open them in motion. Even their basic color filters like hue and saturation are Motion templates. Blur, sharpen, crop and feather… all motion templates. All the looks are templates. Only things like the draw mask, keyer, and color board are native.

But even when X is being a dog and beach balling or lagging, with 32gigs it doesn’t seem to affect other apps like Motion or PS which I’m often running simultaneously.

  • Do you need to zoom in on the vertical or the horizontal? Most people need more horizontal (temporal) to select particular phrases and such. The vertical is just a relative reference of volume no matter how big you make it. If you just need to zoom in closer on the horizontal scale, why not just increase the length of your filmstrips?

Put your 4:3 footage in a 16:9 sequence and stretch it or scale it as you see fit. You either stretch it and distort the image, or you scale it up proportionately and lose image from the top and/or bottom, or you don’t scale or stretch and have black bars on the left and right. Those are your options. The sharpest, distortion free image will be to have the pillar boxing bars on left and right. IMO, scaling it up would be overly soft (you’re essentially blowing it up 300%) and stretching is just, distorted.

Optimizing for export isn’t necessary or beneficial. In fact, I believe that export will draw on originals whenever possible but someone may correct me. It never has been completely clear just how X exports. Does it utilize optimized and/or render files or does it decompress everything for s single pass best quality export? I’ve never gotten a clear answer. If anything, optimized would potentially be a faster export, but not a higher quality one.

If you want to see if optimized gives you better editing performance, select all the media in your event and right click and choose to optimize it. Be sure and watch the progress window because performance will be worse during optimizing, but you can still edit while its optimizing.
