[Shane Ross] “It describes what it’s doing…not clumsy at all. And yes, I’m nitpicking…TOTALLY nitpicking.”

“Add Edit” is more imprecise language. When you “blade” or “slice” a clip you understand that the clip is still contiguous timing wise. “Add Edit” itself doesn’t imply the same thing. It could describe a shot that is contiguous or a shot that has nothing to do with the first shot. Linguistically it could describe either situation. Two can play the nitpicky game.

[Simon Ubsdell] “They also understood that it’s an action you want to perform on the fly, which is why making Blade a mode is an imbecilic idea. “

Yes. That’s why I changed the keyboard shortcut for the B-key from “Blade Tool” to “Blade”. Now it works as it should have from the beginning. Took me about 1 minute to figure it out.

Yes, in theory there are tab-like things. But I’d say with FCP X, unlike Premiere Pro tabs, similar content is grouped together. Premiere tabs you can throw things together at will, which allows for much more customization and, yes, as many mention it can get out of hand fast.

So then the question becomes which “tab-like” area in FCP X do you add a third party window? If it’s a global thing, it makes more sense in the media browser. If it’s a clip-based or project-based thing it makes more sense in the parameter window. There aren’t a lot of options of where to stick something like that and still retain FCP X’s tight control over the workspace. Which has it’s pros and cons.

[Oliver Peters] “The usual COW tangents in this thread, I’m afraid. But, back on point, wouldn’t 3rd party panel integration offer some benefits to FCPX users?”

Maybe. It seems like adding a panel would only work with Adobes tabbed layout. I’m not sure how it would fit into FCP X’s no-tab design. I think there are cases that I think tabs would be useful – for example different timelines in different tabs so you wouldn’t have to cycle through timelines to find the one you want. But I just can’t imagine Apple changing the layout structure of FCP X that radically for better or worse.

I think I’d be happy if plug-ins could have more customization within the Parameters window. I just don’t like the pop-up interface design of things like Neat Video or Color Finale. You have to keep launching the window when moving from clip to clip and they tend to get in the way, so I’m moving them around a lot. It’s definitely not ideal.

  • [Shane Ross] “This might also prove that Apple only really cares about how it’s hardware works with it’s NLE…and doesn’t care at all about performance with other NLEs. Which I guess is fine for them, as FCX sells a lot more copies than Avid and PPro. But does show a general “we really don’t care to play well with others” attitude.”

Not necessarily. Could be Adobe’s lack of interest in improving performance over new “features”. It clearly is an advantage to Apple to have the resources of OS development, but Adobe knows that and can respond accordingly. The fact of the matter is, we don’t know.

You also have to consider time for restoration. If your RAID goes down, how many hours (days?) will it take to restore the data. Unfortunately internet data speeds in the U.S. aren’t typically fast enough for this kind of thing without really expensive, custom fiber installs.

February 14, 2017 at 1:54 pm in reply to: The perfect workflow …

[Shane Ross] “Because yes, there are those who will state, unequivocally, that FCX is the end all and be all of NLE’s…and that the rest are horribly antiquated and anyone who uses them is a dinosaur.”

I don’t know that this has ever actually happened – certainly not for years. And on the flip side, the “FCP X is the worst thing ever, and professionals don’t use it” posts have also largely disappeared. Thank God.

The only reference to the dinosaur trope I’ve seen is people not using FCP X complaining about being labeled “dinosaurs.” Bill’s slightly aggressive boosterism of FCP X aside, I think pretty much all the FCP X users on this forum are very reasonable and cognizant of the pros and cons of FCP X related to different workflows.

Can we just stop using this canard?

[andy patterson] “Are you talking more about how to market on social media? In other words not how does PewdiePie edit (everyone should be able to edit a PewdiePie video) but how did he market his channel? To be honest the YouTube success stories happened from people just being themselves and gaining an audience from pure luck. They didn’t put any thought into it at first. What works for a 21 your old female may not work for you. As I stated I am not 100% sure what you want to know.”

First off I don’t know who the heck PewdiePie is. I’m talking mostly about social media companies like AJ+. There is a lot to their organization, aesthetic, workflow that I believe would be informative.

More business-oriented angle for Youtubers. Really not about any individual, but the market as a whole. And I think within that group there would be various levels of expertise. The fact is, all of them are still making aesthetic decisions that impact their reach. What works for them? What doesn’t? Honestly, I can’t imagine not being curious about this kind of thing. And if you’re in the business of helping organizations with their social media, I’m not sure being uninterested is really doing much for your clients.

[Andrew Kimery] “For larger YouTubers/digital media companies like AJ+, Machima, Maker Studios, Attn:, RocketJump, PopSugar, etc., it’s been my experience that they typically have workflows that are similar to traditional TV/film workflows but just scaled down and/or on a lower budget.”

I’m not sure I agree with that. I think they are using templates in a new way to push content out fast. The end product is certainly much different. But it’s hard to know given that nobody is covering it. And if you’ve ever tried to develop a template workflow, quite frankly it is not simple. Even beyond the technical challenges there is also the organizational and business model structure that would also be interesting.

It’s sort of in the eye of the beholder isn’t it. You want to read articles that inform your workflow. I want to read articles that inform my workflow. I’m just not seeing a lot of the latter here. The real question becomes, is this a board only for those who work on narrative or TV production? Some seem to want it to be.

[Tim Wilson] “I’m being rhetorical here, at least to the extent that it seems blazingly obvious to me that the answer is OF COURSE these stories matter. I want MORE of them, even though I’ll never do that kind of work in those kinds of places. Aside from my general curiosity about how EVERYONE does EVERYTHING, stories like these ESPECIALLY matter for the people who DON’T need persuading. They, we, need encouragement. Inspiration. “

I don’t have a problem with these stories. I find them quite interesting and can occasionally glean useful information from them. However, I think there is an inherent bias in covering them. Nobody is writing a story about how someone edited a video with FCP X in a matter of hours and because he/she was more efficient and got the video out quicker, that allowed him/her to hit a wave of public interest which allowed the video to go viral. Nobody is writing about the editing tools and techniques of Youtubers who make a good living with their videos. Personally I’d love to know about the production workflow of AJ+ or Attn: or any of the other Facebook media creators. Those could also be interesting reads, but I’ve never seen one on Creative Cow.

It’s always, go to the biggest production you can find. It’s “old school.” Nothing wrong with that. But where is the “new school?”
