Have you tried disconnecting all the drives except the new one. Then dragging all video files onto the event icon in the browser? This should do a force relink of the missing files.

Consolidation is a bit unreliable. There are sometimes it copies the files but doesn’t relink. Also another strategy is to export an XML of the timeline. Import it into a new library and do a relink.

Yeah. I thought this was going to be a great feature. It’s actually a dumpster fire. I wish FCP X had some relinking function for Motion Templates.

  • There were some versions of FCP X which were more likely to glitch, I think that problem has been solved for awhile though. I think what you are looking at is some sort of data failure. Either it’s not reading the file correctly. Or when it writes back to the drive, data is corrupted. I think the most likely explanation is your hard drive. Can you check the SMART status of your drives? Also, try moving your cache file to another drive and see if the same problem arises. The issue with RAID 0’s is that if one of the drives is iffy, then the whole array is iffy. The other possible, but less likely, explanation is your RAM is not reliable.

It could also be a fluke with this particular project. But I’d want to test it some more before I’d be comfortable using that drive for another project.

  • One way to target individual clips is to just add the Color Board effect and make an imperceptible adjustment. That way you can go clip by clip.

But I would be concerned about why you’re getting so many glitches. I’m thinking you may have a hard disk issue and your hard drive is corrupting the files.

I do think FCP X should incorporate better collaboration. However, I don’t think that would improve their standing in Hollywood by that much. Mainly I think it’s inertia and specialized tools for workflows already set up for Avid. You might open up possibilities for a disruptive group that starts using FCP X, but that’s about it.

Ironically, the long ago decision to stick “Programs” inside “Events” has made incorporating collaboration much more difficult. If they were separate then users could muck around inside Events all they want and combining them is a simple Boolean Add operation. However once “Programs” are inside Events then versioning has to rectified. It’s not impossible, but more difficult.

I wish when the moved to Libraries, they kept “Projects” in their own container separate from “Events”.

[Andrew Kimery] “First off, I don’t think there is an inherently right or wrong answer with film school. Personally I don’t think it’s worth the huge price most of them charge. A big selling point of film schools used to be access to filmmaking equipment but that’s pretty much a null and void advantage at this point. “

I agree with this. I also think what Bob was talking about was not necessarily the flagship film schools like USC and NYU which do have value for some. Rather the Full Sail and many like schools that have questionable expertise in their instructors and little help for securing a job after graduation.

[Bob Zelin] “So, from what I recall, Ron Howard worked for free in order that he would be given the opportunity to direct a real movie. Once again – you bust your ass, you make sacrifices, and you get what you want.”

While I definitely agree with the sentiment, I think this example perhaps highlights a different truth. That connections make all the difference in the world. Ron Howard did not work for free. He used his fame as an actor to leverage a directing gig in trade for his name as a star.

These barriers can be overcome with hard work. But to be clear for a nobody it’s not going to be as easy as it was fro Ron Howard. This is not to take away anything from his abilities as a director. But I just don’t think it was that hard for him to get a foothold in the industry.

Also do you have an “adjustment layer” or title over top of the stills? As I recall this created issues when copying and pasting between different size timelines.

Strange. I’ve had some weirdness like this before, but not for awhile. You could compound the stills then that would give you a second scale control that wouldn’t affect your original moves.

In Spatial Conform, try setting it as Fill. That may get you close.
